Everyone should read one of Jane Austen's novels--especially Emma or Pride and Prejudice. Or both. ;)
In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. Revolutionary work.
Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
If I could only choose one book as a favorite, it would have to be GWTW. Scarlett and Rhett just came alive for me. I remember curling up in bed for six or seven hours on a Saturday night just transfixed. I don't normally like film adaptions but the Orson Welles version of GWTW is almost as...
I was bad today. :o
I haven't bought a book in months. I have quite a few books that I haven't read plus I rent books through bookswim, a netflix-like program for books, so I've held off . . . until today.
I bought:
A Diary from Dixie, by Mary Chesnut
Sin in the Second City...
100 Best Loved Poems, by Philip Smith
I bought it for a class on poetry and I now carry it with me to work every weekend. I used to have a distaste for poetry but as an English major in school, I was forced to read a lot of it and eventually I came around.
This anthology has a lot of...
Not non-fiction, but
Tale of Two Cities, Dickens
I got through almost all of it, with only eighty pages left, and I still couldn't finish it. :( It's very hard for me to put down a book, especially that far along, but I couldn't help myself.
Also, Les Miserables, by Hugo. I only got...
I absolutely love Esmeralda Santiago's memoirs.
When I was Puerto Rican
Almost a Woman
The Turkish Lover
I read the first one for an international lit. class. It talks about Santiago's life growing up in poverty in rural Puerto Rico. Towards the end she emigrates to the U.S. The...
I love The Other Boleyn Girl. It's one of my favorite books and I've read it numerous times. I've picked up other Phillipa Gregory books but can never seem to get into them.
I used to dogear my books-- guess I got that habit from my mom. That's what she's always done. Now I just use whatever scrap piece of paper I can find.
I'm embarrassed to admit this but . . . The Shopaholic series. It used to be one of my guilty pleasures but I found that the last two weren't as amusing.
I must admit I wasn't enthralled by this book. I actually prefer to not have too much description, but the lack of it in this book it was so detrimental that I failed to make a connection with the characters. The book wasn't a total loss but definitely not one of my favorites.
I just read angela's ashes for the first time and enjoyed it immensly. I have no idea why I waited so long to pick it up because I'm a fan of memoirs. As long as the storyline is intriguing, I have no problem with some fabrication sprinkled in. I have 'tis on the way to me now and I'm anxious to...
I always read before bed, anywhere from ten minutes to an hour or an hour and a half. I also usually take a bath before bed, where I get a chance to read as well. I also read at work, so I average a few hours of reading a day.
Hi, my name is Stephanie and I'm 24 years old. I just graduated in December with a degree in English and I'm currently working as a nanny. I love to read, especially historical fiction.
Some of my favorite books are:
Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
Helter Skelter, by Vincent...
