My Favourite Fantasy Books Of All Time

10 of my favourites in no particular order Lord of the Rings - JRRT The Belgariad (& Mallorean) - David Eddings Dragonlance Chronicals (& Legends) - Weis & Hickman Riftwar Saga (& the others) - REFeist Fionivar Tapestry - GGKay Empire Trilogy - Feist & Wurts George RR Martins series...

    David Gemmell question

Hey Kookamoor, I didn't find the battle scenes highly detailed - I thought they were quite basic and character orientated rather than detail driven, but that's only my take on things. On the other hand, I hated Goodkind. I couldn't even finish the 1st book for boredom. Just goes to show that...

    David Gemmell question

I have just finished my 1st Gemmell - Legend - and have a question. How does this book rate compared to his other material? Is this the best, the worst, or an average Gemmell? I enjoyed Legend. I tore through it in no time. I found it to be simple, not requiring a great deal of thought, not...

Lyndon Hardy and the "five magics"

Sorry - too long ago to remember detail so can't join in the discussion on this one. Too many virgin books on the "to read" pile to revisit Alodar (I believe that was his name) yet either.

    Knife of Dreams

Opinions vary - it seems that opinions are often voiced more loudly when they have popular support however. But each to their own. The only way to truly evaluate something is to see for yourself.

Lyndon Hardy and the "five magics"

Wow, I haven't read those books in alot of years! Was the 1st one called Master of the 5 Magics? I can't remember too much about them, except that I thought they were okay at the time of reading them. Not great, but good.

    Knife of Dreams

I agree - the WHOLE series is worth owning. Yes, he loses the plot so to speak upon occasion, and some story lines have more interest than others but there is more than enough good stuff in this series to keep you entertained, if not enthralled, in my opinion. (Ducks while Jordan haters throw...

The Wizards And The Warriors- Hugh Cook

I've a 2nd hand copy on my shelf that I've never read - something kept putting me off it. So what's your opinion - do I read it? You don't sound too convinced in your initial post.

    Knife of Dreams

I take it it's the hardcover that's out? Haven't been past a book store lately.

The Nine Billion Names of God

I understand what you were getting at with your end of days theories, but I somehow think the world will end more due to natural causes than esoteric - our need to be on this planet is a different subject.

    Raymond E. Feist

Perhaps there is a gender perspective conflict here? I am presuming that Nakmeister is male, as am I, and we were both more than satisfied with the character development in Magician. For myself, I don't need to know every thought and feeling the character has - indeed, sometimes knowing the...

    Raymond E. Feist

Hey Jemima, In my opinion, Magician is Feist's defining work. While I'm a fan of his other material, I don't think it gets any better than Magician.

    Need some suggestions please

Robin Hobb's Farseer is decent light reading. I like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time even though others hate it.

    Raymond E. Feist

Hey! I think you'll find a few Feist fans on the board - I didn't know about the new book. We still haven't got the full Conclave of Shadows trilogy out in paperback yet! Always happy for more Feist though.

    Fantasy Battles

I know I'm slightly off topic again, but on the Tolkien theme, I wish they could have found a place for Old Man Willow in the Old Forest, Tom Bombadil & Goldmoon, & the Barrow Wight. Some of my favourite scenes. Book 1 is my favourite. Bree & Weathertop were well done. My biggest gripe is the...

    Fantasy Battles

I agree Monkey - I was a bit worried about the movie not doing the scene justice, but all in all, they did a good job. The Ents were a lot taller in my mind however - you can't have everything. A movie can never compete with a book, or your imagination, but they did well I think.

Magician: Pug and the Games Arena (possible spoilers)

Short of risking a threadjacking, it would be interesting to hear from others about their favourite vivid scenes from other books perhaps?

    Fantasy Battles

The battle of Helms Deep with Legolas & Gimli keeping score was excellent. Have to agree with the Feist posts. I also thought Artemis & Drizzt were entertaining. Mandorallen riding into battle chuckling in the Belgariad brings a smile to my face.

Magician: Pug and the Games Arena (possible spoilers)

There are some scenes that are so well described, the images they depict are almost life like in the mind. The games was definitely one for me, Pug on the tower becoming a Great One was another. As a kid, Tolkien's ringwraiths had this effect on me, and still create great atmosphere for me...
