Hmmm favourite films....god there's so many of them.....
The Butterfly effect - but only the original - the directors cut is crap.
Billy Elliott
Gosford Park
Mona Lisa Smile
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Star Wars (4-6)
The Phantom of the Opera
Memento - I agree this film is genius but...
Haven't seen Troy so can't comment.
King Arthur - the story didn't make any sense. Historically it was completely inaccurate but Clive Owen made up for everything!! :) :p Ps. Am I the only person in the world that fancies him?
The bit on the ice was pretty cool too..........
I'm also listening to U2!!! but 'The Best of 1990-2000' - "Beautiful Day".
Haven't bought the new album yet. There's news stuff's good but their old stuff's better.
I take it this is the opening chapter of a novel? I don't know much about writing but I do know that it is crucially important in the opening chapters to capture your audiences imagination and create a sense of mystery so that they want to read on, and I think this piece does that very well. I'm...
I thought 'A Beautiful Mind' was quite a good film....I finally understood what Schizophrenia is and I thought it was quite an intelligent and sensitive look at the condition, but the wife beating's a surprise - I didn't know there was a book either and have only seen the film. He did attack...
Hi Mai!
Sorry, yeah you won't want to be in New Roots if you're a post grad - far too noisy! To be fair it's 4 bathrooms between 12 people and 2 between 6 I think, and it's students so everyone's getting up at different times, but Claycroft's probably the best accommodation that specifically...
Thank you Kookamoor, you're so right!
Martin - you clearly don't remember your dreams.
I've kept a dream diary on and off because I always have the weirdest dreams. Looking back I realise a couple of them have predicted the future, just by their symbolism, others exactly as it happened in...
I totally agree!! Over the years I've come back to this book countless times, but it still makes me laugh even now. I love the chapter entitled 'Your New Computer' (p.309); "Congratulations. You are ready to set up your new computer. If you have not yet acquired a degree in electrical...
Hi Ron!
This is my first week on the site as well, but everyone's been pretty friendly to me so far. Still, this is a good idea....
(Personal details) :
- Where are you from? (Country, state, city...)
South London, England
- How old are you and what is your gender?
22, Female
- What...
ps.
It's a good idea to apply for campus accommodation in your first year (which you are entitled to), just in terms of settling in and getting to know some fellow students.
You have to live out in your second year anyway, final year places are subject to a ballot, so you may as well make...
Warwick?? - best years of my life!!
Hi Mai!!
I went to the University of Warwick...very cool place, I really enjoyed my time there!!!
Best accommodation (on campus)?? Either New Roots or Tocil - don't make the mistake of going for accommodation with seperate bathrooms as I did in my first...
Recommendation: Similar books to Atonement
For anyone that enjoyed Atonement, or even those that liked the themes of the book but thought it was a bit slow, I seriously recommend you read "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hossini.
It covers the same themes of guilt and the search for redemption but...
Thanks!
Thanks for that Erica, you've just saved me £5.99! - that critic seems to think it's just an excuse for toilet humour, which generally I don't find very funny. Don't think it's worth buying somehow!
Has anyone read the spoof books Barry Trotter or Bored of the Rings? Was thinking of buying one because they're small books, will fit in my bag and sometimes I could do with a laugh on the way to work! But are they actually funny or just a bit silly? Have anyone read them?
Atonement in a league of its own
I got into Enduring Love first after an excerpt of it was in my A-level exam. I thought it was very well written and I hated Jed until the very last page as I'm sure we're supposed to do. But I didn't feel it said anything particularly new from other novels...
James Joyce
You have not suffered until you have been forced to read 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' - by James Joyce!!!!
I have never read anything so boring in all my life. I remember our teacher asking us to read 'the next couple of chapters' for our lesson the next day. Sounds ok...
Favourite Actor is most definitely Clive Owen!!! I just love all that smouldering moodiness. He does it so well, especially in Gosford Park - brilliant film!
Favourite Actress - Julie Walters, shes just so convincing, and shes a lovely person. Though Julia Stiles is a close second.
4 and 2 halves
The books I've read so far this year are.....
The Five People You Meet in Heaven - Mitch Albom
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - Mark Haddon
The Kite Flyer - Khaled Hosseini
Those three I read in the space of about a week, which is very unusual for me -...
