    Haruki Murakami

More 'Wild Sheep' plot revealers... ‘Wind’ indeed can be found on eBay from time to time and it’s generally pretty cheap. _Pinball_ surfaces occasionally and fetches, well, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it sell for less than $400. These are simply little tiny OOP English books printed in...

    Chuck Palahniuk

As I told Miss Poe privately, I don’t mean to discourage anyone from reading _Haunted_ just because I disliked it. There are worse ways to spend $25 and far less appealing writers you could support. If you don’t like it then you can always ‘release it’ via Bookcrossing or donate it to a library...

    Haruki Murakami

**Warning - possible _A Wild Sheep Chase_ spoilers** Hmmmm, not necessarily. Buttttt… Does she have some profound similarities to the girl with the ears? Yes. But if anything I think this is some great character set-up and development for the narrating character. While the _Hear the...

    I just finished reading...

_Haunted_ by Chuck Palahniuk For years I have been puzzled by Chuck Palahniuk’s use of line breaks. And periods. The befuddlement continues with his newest ‘novel of stories’, Haunted (2005). With the completion of this reading I now file Chuck’s last 3 novels as difficult reads. Not...

    Haruki Murakami

Ishel, I'll form some thoughts on your questions in a bit but check back a page or two for the order the HM books were written. Indeed _Dance Dance Dance_ is a sequel, but certainly not mandatory to read right after _A Wild Sheep Chase_. Maybe it's even better to have some breathing space...

That’s my least favourite, but does seem to be high on many lists. I'm partial to _A Wild Sheep Chase_, but will concede that _The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle_ is his masterpiece.

    Chuck Palahniuk

No problem, we’ve all gone though a stage where talking about breasts keeps us awake at night. Get some sleep, I’ll air-brush some sheep for you… If you don’t and you’re like one of them thar collecting peoples, I can look to see if I still have my copy. If it didn’t meet the fate of...

    Chuck Palahniuk

Guts versus Breasts I don’t recall ever seeing breasts in any recent issue of Playboy…something *almost* resembling breasts but airbrushed and usually coupled with some dimwitt, probably with a tattoo (defined as stupid and verrry unsexy and way past “cool” now) and maybe a very passé belly...

    Chuck Palahniuk

I haven't followed the magazine every month, but indeed "Guts" was in it, although last year. I didn't know he had 2 appearances this year. I know he was meant to be in the February issue but then surprisingly the brilliant story "The Afterlife" by brilliant Amy Hempel was in it instead, so I...

    Chuck Palahniuk

Gawd-awful cover to it...but yes, you can NOW run out and get it. Or if you want a signed copy you can order one from the book shop, St. Helen’s, that CP frequents. www.sthelensbookshop.com (tell them jay from www.amyhempel.com sent ya) That was the first story Playboy printed that...

    Chuck Palahniuk

It's already out. Release date was moved up. "Guts" was the story someone was probably citing...pretty bad story at that. I think Chuck will continue his extreme sled ride downhill. And Yes, _Choke_ is a good book to start with.

Sound and the Fury **slight spoilers** but an aide to the confused. It will come together…keep in mind that Benjy has *no* concept of time. From sentence to sentence he may change tenses or time narration. The trick to staying with this is his caretakers were with him at different...

Nope, that one is well filed away under “immensely dislike”. Maybe hate. Farrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr too many other books to tackle, and even re-read, before that could ever be a thought. What did you think of Kiss of the Spider Woman? I loved it. Excellent stuff. While of course this books...

Totally. I could understand someone saying, "my gawd, I'm xx and haven't read _Wuthering Heights_ or _Sound and the Fury_ our countless others...but Hitch Guide?, not really. I read it when I was around 15 and it was pretty shallow and not very good then. Anyway, reading a bunch of Amy...

    Paul Auster

Well put. Auster is great. And I too wouldn't say 'trippy', to me it's more like life sometimes is, or maybe moreso should be. Highly recommended in this day and age where there are so few living writers worth reading and looking forward to new works from.

_Choke_ had some great ideas. I think that's where Chuck peaked, in my eyes it's been a rapid descent into really bad writing. Not sure if hitting the Best Seller list (with _Choke_) had an effect or it loosened up his editorial demands or what. Although I remain curious as to what _Haunted_...

    I just finished reading...

Might as well finish it up: _Choke_ and _Fight Club_ or just switch to some writers that make Chuck's writing seem sloppy, over-written, trying to much too hard and under-achieving. Amy Hempel for instance. Paul Auster may be a good antidote.

Pray on this CP has a new article online. Kind of weak and silly, I'm more for a Temple of Shutthefuckup...j http://www.nerve.com/personalessays/palahniuk/churchofstories/

    Haruki Murakami

Yes indeedy. I don’t know…just the way I saw envisioned it. The way she kind of questioned him the morning after, “what are you looking at?” as if nothing special or nothing at all happened the night before. Or maybe she was just being coy. I will stick with my thoughts on it until I...

    American novel recommendation

The lists could be endless...and I agree a Faulkner would capture the American South at a certain period of time, as would a Flannery O’Conner or a John Steinbeck. Pynchon would be great, but possibly a heavy read. Raymond Chandler would encapture the ‘noir’ feel of the 30s and 40s which is...
