If you don't mind time travelling being involved, go for "Doomsday Book" by Connie Willis. A great, intelligent, fun read about a modern-day visitor travelling into 1348 England.
We have a glass door that's hardly ever open. The one time it was closed that did not deter a visitor from trying to walk inside anyway. (He made a nice big bang and left a greasy stain on the glass at forehead level.)
