Sarah Waters - The Little Stranger :stars4:
A very atmospheric tale set at a crumbling manor in Warwickshire shortly after World War II. Strange things have begun to happen to the three remaining members of the owner's family - peculiar sounds at night, inexplicable marks on the walls, funny...
I read Fatherland when I was still in school and loved it a lot (I've wanted to re-read it ever since but never got around to it).
"Pompeii" wasn't bad either, but I liked "Fatherland" better.
Hello and welcome! What a lovely introduction.
Nice to see that you're counting a few of my German countrymen among your favourites. Thomas Mann's "Buddenbrooks" and a few of Hesse's books are favourites of mine among German "classics".
pontalba, that sounds a lot like our weather in the past two months!
The sun has put in a surprise appearance here today. It's pretty cold (around 0°C), but blue skies are a very nice change from that ugly grey.
No idea what's supposed to hit the big screen in summer, but right now I'm looking forward to All Things to All Men, starring Rufus Sewell, Gabriel Byrnes and Toby Stephens. UK premiere is scheduled for end of February.
The "Hostellerie de la Pointe Saint-Mathieu" - a lovely restaurant situated in a 14th century building a stone's throw from the picturesque coast of western Brittany that serves excellent food and a mouth-watering buffet dessert.
What was the first book you bought yourself?
Reading, writing, watching movies, singing, cooking. I'm trying to get myself back on an exercise routine (yoga or Pilates), but I haven't been very successful so far.
What word do you find fascinating?
My last movie (on DVD) was The Importance of Being Earnest. I absolutely loved it. That one's in for many re-watches.
Other than that, I'm currently watching the Band of Brothers box. It's really a great series about WWII.
