I was a great fan of the Anne of Green Gables books, too. Still am, in fact. Whenever I need a comfort read, it's most likely Anne I'll turn to.
I'm too old to have read Harry Potter when I was a kid, but I still enjoyed the books very much as an adult.

I don't quite agree about "Babel". Yes, all the songs are in a similar vein, but that's the typical Mumfords style which I personally like very much.

The last book I read in 2012 was another highlight: "Helmet For My Pillow" by Robert Leckie, a brilliant account of his tour of duty in the South Pacific in WWII.
