I only read the first volume (because I won it in a raffle :D ) and really had to force myself to sit through it. I don't think I'd have stuck with it if I hadn't read it with a reading group. A very flat plot line, clichéd characters and sex scenes that I found rather tacky and not at all...
I hated Gatsby when I first tried to read the book, but I gave it a second chance a year or two ago and really liked it that time.
I finished "From Here to Eternity" yesterday. A bit lengthy in parts, but altogether a very good close-up insight into the lives of enlisted men and noncom...
A nice little granite cottage on the coast of Brittany, with a few hydrangeas in my garden and the sea close by and a lighthouse on the other side of the bay.
Your best Christmas gift ever?
The Faerie series by Herbie Brennan is a hilarious take at the subject matter.
Or, an old classic, Michael Ende's "Neverending Story" (which is so much better than the movie).
I have read quite a few WW II books recently.
One classic about ordinary men in combat is certainly Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead", a close-up portrait of an infantry platoon fighting in a Philippine island.
On a totally different note, I liked "Letters from Home" by Kristina...
I'd love to give you a recommendation, but it'd help if I knew what kind of books you like particularly, GoatLady. What were your biggest favourites recently (or not so recently)?
Not really, but I try to send at least a few to feel less guilty when I find someone has taken the time to write one to me.
Do you prefer traditional Christmas music or holiday-season pop?
I have the DVD box but haven't yet started watching. I caught the Bastogne episode by chance on TV recently, though. Very chilling, both in the literal and in the figurative sense of the word.
Also loved Bill Guarnere and Edward Heffron's memoir, very very vivid oral history.
