i'll second the Melanie Rawn reference.
(although i don't consider it "girly" at all)
she's also got a second series calle the "Exiles" which starts with "The Ruins of Ambrai"
another one is Fiona Patton who has a series which starts with "The Stone Prince"
and a third suggestion would be...
Uriah Heep
Sansa(daughter of Eddard Stark in George RR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire")
theres many more, but i forget character's names rather easily, and i'm too lazy to research the characters.
The thing to remember about Michael Moore is not whetther he's an empathetic observer trying to bring followers to his causes. Nor is it that Mr. Moore can claim that everything he puts out is based in fact.
The thing to remember is he is a capitalist. His objective above everything else is to...
yeah, Dave's good, but not consistently good.
even within aseries he doesn't write consistently well.
(but he keeps writing good enough for me to keep buying his stuff;))
this just doesn't seem like that type of forum.
if the traffic relied more heavily on spam, then i could see it, but...this seems to be more of an informal literature discussion place than a spam bar.
although as a side note when i was a freshman in high school, i had gotten about 1/3 through "The Stand" and came down with a severe sinus infection that had almost the exact same symptoms as Captain Trips.
now THAT scared the ever-livin bejeesus out of me!
Bloody Roger Flint
Every pirate lives for something different. For some, it's the open sea. For others (the masochists), it's the food. For you, it's definitely the fighting. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!
one of the most disturbing books that i've read isn't fiction at all.
Patricia Cornwell, famed forensic crime novelist, wrote a book about using actual forensic evidence and fact from the Jack the Ripper case and comes up with a completely different killer than anyone really suspected.
the...
yeah, i can grok that. ;)
also keep in mind that "new" words don't always have to be made up.
one of the best examples of this is from "A Clockwork Orange", where much of the slang came from a hybridization of english and russian.
Actually, you hit the Master of Horror right off the bat.
H.P. Lovecraft was the absolute scariest i've ever read. Noone else even comes close to him.
you're in for a good read. ;)
the movies have never fully done the novel justice in my point of view.
the mid 70's version comes closest, but still doesn't quite hit it.
if you're like me, you'll want to read more of Dumas when you're finished witht the Musketeers.

oldies but goodies:
Theives World collaborative effort headed by Robert Aspirin
The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock
any of the Conan series by Robert Howard
the Iron Tower Duology by Dennis L McKiernan
The Black Company series by Glenn Cook

a couple more authors that haven't been mentioned yet that i enjoyed:
The Mote in God's Eye

all with Larry Niven and some with Jerry Pournelle
I also liked the NorthWorld series by David Drake

and some of Modesitt's Ecologic...
i think i'd have to know the age of the 'newb' that i'd be recommending to.
the first fantasies i read were by Lloyd Alexander , called "The Chronicles of Prydain" it was a 5 book boxed set before EVERYTHING was a boxed set.
(we're talking 1973-74 here)
follow that closely with the Narnia...
