Some good fantasy authors who I have read are:
Raymond E Feist
George Martin
Robin Hobb
Katherine Kerr
Sara Douglas
Of course, there is always Tolkien as well.
I think the best thing would be to read a lot of short stories and see what kind of language they use. When you come across things you haven't seen before, write them down, so you don't forget them. In my experience, which is quite limited, the best way to learn to write (after you know the...
I've never actually been banned from a forum. I have been at forums where people fight over stupid things. I generally tend to just add something humurous in order to break the tension and depending on their mood they either flame me or settle down. Either way, I don't care. :)
My friend has been trying to get me to read this book for a few years now, but I really don't think I could deal with it. I've never been able to handle those kinds of stories. They make me feel sick and angry.
I realise that you are probably talking more about fiction, but for non-fiction, A.J.P Taylor was indeed a prolific writer and I have liked everything I've read by him, although he is writing history not novels.
I love my country and I love the fact that we are fairly unimportant in a global perspective. I don't think I would like to live anywhere else, but there are lots of places I would love to visit for a while, even a long while, but I would always be happy to come home.
If you want to write, you need to read a lot. You wouldn't try and build a house if you didn't have some practise at it, would you? So why would you try to write if you don't read? In order to write well, you must read.
I was listening to an author give a speech to senior students today and one of the things she talked about was character development. Some hints she gave were:
1. interview your characters.
2. take a trip as the character, eg. a ride in a bus, etc. and take a note book with you describing...
I have read a few of Michener's books: The Source, The Drifters, Caravans, Tales of the South Pacific and am half way through Poland and Centenial.
Caravans was the first one I read and I loved it. Like you, I had bought it for my dad and when I was sick one day and looking for something to...
I've never thrown a book, although I have sworn and cursed at them.
I once accidently dropped a book I was reading in a river. I was fishing and reading, as you do, and got all excited when I caught a fish. I knocked everything over in my efforts to get the fish in and the book went flying...
I tend to leave my books in a place where I know I will find them easily again when I want them, like the kitchen table. But they always move themselves, miraculously, to some other place where I can't find them and have to ask, "Has anyone seen my book?" The thing is that they are usually...
I think, like others here, that it is possible to learn from some historical fiction. Some that come to mind would be Colleen McCullough's The First Man in Rome and the books that followed this. I know she did extensive research before writing these books, but at the same time she reminds us...
Pride and Prejudice is a great book. It was the first Jane Austen novel I read and was my favourite for a long time. Now my favourite is Northanger Abbey in which she writes about the silliest heroine of all time. :)
My 14 year old went to bed at 8:30 until she was 13. It has only been the last year that I have allowed her to stay up later. My 6 year old is in bed by 7:30. If I didn't enforce this, I would never get a moment's peace. But what Cajunmama says is true. Children who don't have enough sleep...
I haven't read Anna Karenina or Crime and Punishment, but I have read War and Peace. In my opinion, you don't need to prepare for it in any way because Tolstoy is very thorough. I don't want to say more in fear of saying too much. I enjoyed the novel thoroughly
I had to read Jane Austen for high school. I loved Pride and Prejudice, but found it hard to get through Emma. I also had to read Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence and wasn't too impressed at all. At the time I was about 16 and objected to having to think about how many times an author used a...
