    Are Book Genres Meaningless?

What about literary genre? Once again I will clarify what my point was and that was that ALL books are categorised at some point and placed into a genre, no matter what section of a bookshop they live in. I understand that genre fiction is written to fit into a specific literary genre, but...

    The Child in Us

I will. :) That was so well said. I couldn't agree with you more. The day we forget how to play is the day we start getting old and I have absolutely no intention of ever getting old. Yes, I have my responsibilities as a mother and in my job, but that doesn't mean I have to stop playing.

    Please help!

Yes, I'm inclined to think it sounds like Trixie Belden. I read them around 1981.

    Are Book Genres Meaningless?

You may disagree all you like, as that is your right. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know when I say that plot and theme are two totally different things. Plot cannot be theme. One is the story line and one is the message the author is trying to convey. The theme is...

    Pride and Prejudice

Actually, Keira Knightley was a very good Elizabeth in the new one. I thought all the characters were very well cast.

    Recommendations for a Fantasy "Newb"

I liked Terry Brooks. What Jem says is true, but he still writes a great story. The Wizard of Earthsea is ok, but I wasn't overly impressed with it. As for Sarah Douglas, I've read The Axis Trilogy and the Wayfarer Redemption Trilogy. I liked both a lot.

    Pride and Prejudice

Has anyone seen this yet? I went and saw it a few nights ago, with some trepidation, however, I was really impressed. I would be interested to hear the opinion of anyone else who has seen it. Do you think it was true to the book? (Yes, I know it left a lot out, but even so with what it...

    The Fiftieth Gate

Thanks, Geenh. We actually need other resources so I will suggest this one to them. Thanks again.

Drizzt and the dark elf trilogy

I was really disappinted in the Paths of Darkness as well. With the other books, I would rip through them in about 2 days, but each of these books took me several weeks to finish because they just didn't grab me. Like Jem said, there was nothing really new in them. I have the first two from...

    R.A. Salvatore

I have never killed Drizzt, LOL, but then again I only played the games once. ;) But in reguard to the Drizzt books, I agree with Jem. They are a fun read, but that's it.

    "well read"

This is exactly how I think of the term, 'well read', Novella. Like you said, it implies that some learning has occurred from all different subjects, not just that a person has read a lot of books.

    Are Book Genres Meaningless?

Actually, I like the division of books in the book shops. It makes it a lot easier for me to know where to go when I want something specific, but I'm lazy, so there you go. :p In my opinion all fiction can be placed into genres, whether they are categorised that way or not. There are heaps...

    War Fiction

Battle Cry, by Leon Uris is good. It's about the war in the Pacific. Also, All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque is a very good WW1 book, writen from the German perspective. Heels in Line by J.E. Pryce, I haven't read, but my husband first began reading after reading this...

    Discussion: Brooks, Terry: Jarka Ruus

I have it, but haven't read it yet. I wanted to wait for the others if there are any.

    The Fiftieth Gate

Unfortunately, yes. The way we work out what we are doing means that we have to inlcude: poetry, shakespeare, novel, non-fiction (and a few other text types), and drama. Within these categories there are certain choices. After I chose the others, this was really all I was left with.

How often do you talk about books?

Well I talk about books a lot to anyone who will listen. :)

    Trolls

It was an interesting link. Thanks for sharing. I delete their posts and send them a PM telling them to behave. I then tell the other mods and if the person continues then they are banned along with their IP. :)

    Margaret Atwood: Oryx And Crake

I was supposed to read this book, so I could discuss it with some friends, but I was never able to finish it. I really didn't like it much at all, story-wise. I like the way she wrote it and thought that she captured the male persona perfectly. The friends I was supposed to discuss it with...

    Book Clubs

I was a member of this book club several years ago. It's not true that there were 'no ties'. Each month they would send you their book of the month for you to peruse. If you didn't like it, you could send it back within a certain amount of days, but this meant that you would have to pay for...

    The Fiftieth Gate

I am teaching this book, as a part of our senior advanced English course, first term, next year. I started it yesterday and so far I am totally confused. It is by a guy named Mark Raphael Baker. The book is being studied for a module called History and Memory. After reading it for a bit...
