Ah, you are lucky. Our govt. phased out the pensions for retired teachers just before I started teaching. We have superannuation now, which will not give me enough to live on when I retire. But I am optimistic. :p I plan to buy a few houses one day and when I retire, I will seel the most...
Unfortunately for you, I'm sure that your teacher isn't an idiot. For this reason he/she would recognise that this isn't your work. Teachers are good at that.
Start reading the book. It won't take you long to get to know who the main characaters are and the setting is described throughout...
I'm pretty good at phasing out when I'm reading and therefore it is generally pretty hard to interrupt me. I do get annoyed when people fail to realise that I am engrossed in a book and continue to bother me until I realise they are speaking to me. I feel like saying to them, "Do I look like...
Well, when I was at school, I did hang out with the cool kids. I did some of the stupid things they did and I didn't do some of the other stupid things they did. My friends knew that I would do what I wanted to do, no matter how much they harrassed me to follow them. So if, when they called...
I love used book stores, but I tend to use them to buy books that are out of print or harder to find books. But not only that, as the saying goes, "One man/woman's junk is another's treasure" and you can find some great classics at the better used book stores.
I have started reading Wuthering Heights again. It has been a long while since I have read it and already I have been drawn back into the book and I've only read the first few pages.
Some of you sound like you have my daughter. :p She read a lot until she was about 11 then she became more active socially and a less active reader. Thinking back, I think I did the same thing. I'm hoping that, like me, she will rediscover her love of reading when the social scene isn't quite...
I'm going to answer this topic from two angles. :p One: the teacher and Two: the parent.
We have D.E.A.R. every morning during roll call. The students are expected to read something, anything, (except porn and other inappropriate mater) as long as they read. They are not allowed to do...
This is a nice forum. I enjoy the topics about the different books, although I am constantly reminded of just how little I have actually read. It is nice to be able to come somewhere and have intelligent discussions with people about the books you enjoy.
Hehehe, well I have been waiting for Katherine Kerr's final ones of the Deverry series for over 5 years now and I worry that she'll never finish them. This is why I decided not to get into anymore series until all of them were written.
I'm so glad the level of disappointment wasn't too bad...
I can't decide. There are just too many places I would like to visit. To be honest, I'm not sure I would actually like to live in any of them permenantly, but I'd definitely like to go visit for a while. So a few I would like to go to:
Terry Brooks' world he created in the Shanarra series...
Even Shakespeare wasn't original. Originality wasn't appreciated back then. There is a certain comfort in the familiar. Most romances follow the Cinderella formula, and as Peder said, in crime novels we expect that the bad guy will get caught in the end.
I do think that plots are...
Don't forget that an important part of learning is being able to discuss the things you are actually learning about. Of course, there would be some lazy kids who are just wanting us to give them their answers, but there may be some who are having trouble grasping something and wish to discuss...
I don't tend to have favourites, but some authors I really like, in no particular order of preference, are:
Jane Austen
Leon Uris
James A Mitchener
Katherine Kerr
Frank Peretti
J R R Tolkien
Recently a friend sent me an email to give me the address of the bookcrossing site. I read it and wrote back and told him that I just didn't think I could allow my books to go out into the unkown and quite possibly never hear anything of them again. Well I met up with him today and he started...
Plot is very important to me since it is the story of the novel that I enjoy most. I don't need a particular setting to enjoy a book. Although I love fantasy because it is pure escapism, I don't need fantasy elements to be present in order for me to choose to read a book. I let the author...
Well to me, a book is a book. As I said in the other thread, there are some very well written genre fiction books. The fact that they are genre fiction does not make them any less valuable. There are also some very poorly written books that are considered 'literature'.
When I hear the...
I'm sorry if this topic is inappropriate for this section, but I was unsure where else to ask this.
The last few days I have been having trouble with this site. The forum is very slow in opening pages and sometimes the pages don't open properly at all.
So is there some problem or is it...
