Maybe this thread should be called buy, borrow or steal.
The last option could help ease financial hardship amongst those of us who don't have a lot of money.
It's difficult to make absolute distinctions between art and entertainment. Depends entirely on which subjective value system is in play.
I haven't written for a while, when I write I write fiction and (during the process) don't much care whether people see it as art, proper literature or...
Lolita by Nabokov - because it's compelling, seedy and straddles the line between poetry and prose without sounding pretentious. The man has a capacity for description that is very rare. One of my all time favourite reads. Get the annotated version - lots of interesting info about the double...
I Am Not Stiller by Max Frisch. A classic, great idea, very deep - but gawd awful translation. If I could read German I could read it in the original form but the English translation I have is appalling.
If they can translate Jelinek, Suskind and Ingo Schulze then they should be able to...
Not sure whether everyone should read the same thing but a couple of writers blow me away.
Anything by Elfriede Jelinek is fantastic. The Piano Teacher was her most well known book but I prefer Women As Lovers, Wonderful Wonderful Times and Lust. Her narrative style / use of language and...

I'm going to read Catch-22 (hope you're enjoying it) quite soon and also Slaughterhouse 5.
Hi Haginotani,
Your English is just fine.
I'm in the UK and like edgy books. Perhaps you could try Chuck Palahniuk (he wrote Fight Club) and less commercial authors like Elfriede Jelinek - she's an Austrian Nobel Prize winning feminist writer who writes very unconventional / controversial...
Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
A little about myself - I live in the UK, love reading and writing and I'm looking forward to being a member of this forum.
Have a great day.

I'm new to this forum, so a big hello to everyone.
I'd be grateful for any recommendations for novels with a Vietnam theme and a bit of information about storyline / gist etc..
At the moment I'm reading First Blood by David Morrell. Although the book isn't set in Vietnam it raises some...
