Well I didn't feel that Eragon was particularly original or well written from what I read of it compared to authors like China Mieville, M John Harrison, Steven Erikson, R Scott Bakker, Gene wolfe etc.. but then again everyone's going to have differnet tastes and opinions on these things which...
Yeh well at least I can watch the cricket. I usually go to one day of the Boxing Day Test but it was just too hot this year. At least the Aussies won...:D
Well if you're referring to mainstream society I'd have to agree with you to an extent. I've noticed and I think this is still a trend that people who read "fantasy" are looked upon as being a bit strange or on the fringe and to somehow not be reading something that is deemed as being worthwhile...
Very warm here in the last few days notwithstanding it is summer.
Today is a top of 38 degrees celcius = 100.4 farenheit
Tommorow which is New Year's Eve is pedicted to be 42 degrese celcius = 107.6 farenheit
I won't be out celebrating in that heat but hunched up with the air...
I prefer audio books to e-books becasue Yes they're quite handy to listen to when you're doing other tasks BUT also like the feel of the actual book itself audiobooks somehow feel more human or accesible because you're listening to a human voice rather than just viewing lines on a screen.
Well you may want to check out fantasy writers Gene Wolfe, M. John Harrison, Italo Calvino, China Mieville and I'm reliably told Jaff Vandermeer and to a lesser extent Janny Wurts, George RR Martin and Seven Erikson as they're all very fine writers IMHO...:)
I tend to agree with you a bit Billy, Salvatore has a certain entertainment value but could hardly be compared to great literature, not with the likes of Wolfe, Bakker, Martin, Erikson, Calvino, Harrison, Mieville et al.. to call upon anyway.
Well there's probably too many to list but some of my favs are:
Italo Calvino - Invisible cities
Stephen Donaldson - Runes of the earth (read all of the covenant books)
Steven Erikson - Malazan series (the best! )
George RR Martin - Song of Ice and Fire
R Scott Bakker - Prince of Nothing...
Yes I agree from that point of view as I indicated in my original post but for those of us who can afford the printed and bound copies I'll always go for the genuine article when given the option..
Well the Krondor trilogy is probably his worst effort to date, so you're not wrong in your assement there.
Jimmy The Hand is quite good stuff IMO, not least because he's my fav character in the books.
Murder in La Mut is reasonably interesting, certianly better than the Krondor trilogy but...
Plenty actually althoguh I don't mind Tom Hanks, he's quite a good actor I think.
Sadly the Davinici Code by Dan Brown is based on a series of alledgedly unfounded assertions which have been exposed by various programs too numerous to list here. The book itself is also a pretty average read...
Well an obvious one I can think of is the 4 part fantasy based series by author Tad Williams called Otherland. It revolves around people in the real world who are essentially sucked into a virtual reality universe as they battle against a cartel bent on world domniation. Tad uses the interent to...
HMMM..looks like I joined this thread a little late but I've read most of Guy Gavriel Kay's work. My favs are his stand-alone book Tigana which this thread obviously highlights but also his Finovar Tapestry. Mind you I read these books 15 and 20 years ago respectively but they were certainly an...
Yes basically his original Icewind Dale trilogy and Dark Elf trilogy are his best efforts. Having said that the books are very generic and highly predictable and don't exactly inspire one to any great heights although he has a certain skill in describing battle scenes and one-to-one combat.
I...
Sounds interesting yes but from what people I know who have read the books say she doesn't really manage to hold everytrhing together well enough to make it a coherent enough read...:(
Well it may be true that the predomninat technology for delivering books to readers in the future may take the guise of e-books but I think given the amount of resistance people have to e-books vs. the tactile and currently practical appeal books retain that there will always be a significant...
Well I agree Garth is a pretty talented writer. I enjoyed his Old Knigdom series and his current Keys to the Kingdom series is quite impressive, which is saying somethinhg for a jaded veteran of fantasy like me....:D
Being an aussie, I've met Garth a few times and enjoyed chatting with him...
