Charles Dickens: A Tale Of Two Cities

I've just started reading it for the first time. So far it seems quite heavy going.

    Authors Who Buy Bad Books

It would be great to see more variety in the bookshops horror section, but it's never going to happen. I remember reading an interview with a bookshop owner, who said 'if I can preorder over 100 books by King and sell them all, and I order 1 book by an unknown author that doesn't sell, which...

Do you judge a book by its cover?

Very impressive artwork, and well worth checking out.

    Literary Agents

If 100 people fall for it, then that £350 becomes £35,000. And there are probably a lot of people willing to pay that money if they think an agent will represent them. An agent should make money by selling your work. Period.

    Preparing to write

No conditions, I just write whenever I get the time - and that time frame seems to get smaller and smaller as other things demand their slice of the clock.

    Reading Fees

'Money should flow to the writer ... money should flow to the writer'. It's a simple mantra, but accurate.

    40k words enough?

Thanks. As I said, her suggestion did make the novel better, so it was good advice that I didn't mind taking. It did take a lot of rewriting as it changed a major part of the story, but it was worth it. Now I have a better story and an agent. Good luck with your novel.

    40k words enough?

To answer your original post, If you're happy with it, I believe your best bet is to submit the manuscript and see what happens. If a publisher/agent or whatever likes it, but asks you to lengthen it, then do it. They know the business - it's how they make their living. I recently acquired the...

I swear by 'The Elements of Style' by William Strunk and E.B. White.

    Questions about adjectives and adverbs

To describe the dogs restlessness, you need to give it an action. Although not a great example, perhaps something like this: The dog padded in circles, ears pricked every time the shop door opened. I think the dog walking in circles shows it's restless, while the pricked ears shows that it's...

Trying to write as the opposite gender?

    Philip Pullman: His Dark Materials

I read the first book and wondered what all the fuss was about. The other two (I bought all three as a set) have sat untouched for ages now. Perhaps one day I'll read them.

    Dean Koontz

I'm about 3/4 of the way through The Taking. I used to read a lot of Koontz books, but this is the first one I've picked up in a while, and I'm disappointed to say that it's a slog to get through. I just can't feel for the main character at all as she seems insipid and lacklustre. I think my...

    Hi

Hi Lovermuffin, Good to 'meet' you. In answer to your question, the house belonged to my grandparents, who were the cemetery caretakers, and my mother and I used to live with them. :)

    Alex Garland: The Beach

The book was a lot darker than the film, so even if someone has seen the film first, the book is well worth reading.
