    George Orwell: Animal Farm

I LOVED Animal Farm. It was required reading back in high school. The story, on all levels, is quite entertaining, especially when you look at what Orwell was writing about. I'd definitely recommend it.

Hello (what an original thread title!)

Hey Bill! Welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy yourself here. I've only recently become more active and I'm really enjoying all the stimulating conversation here. Everyone's great!

right to life - right to die

Yup, I agree. And supposedly this case has sparked a lot of people going out and making theirs. I just think it's very dangerous to start defining what is and what isn't an acceptable quality of life. Of course, no one wants to be disabled, but when we sit here and label such and such as no...

What's the WORST book you ever read?

I don't think that was it. I'll probably just have to go back to the library and try to figure out who it was because I just can't remember!

right to life - right to die

How can a person not suffer if they're being starved to death? She's plenty responsive as it is. I find it hard to believe that she's not going to feel any pain as her body wastes away from lack of nutrition. If people ever used starvation a way to "put animals out of their misery," you can...

    Current Non-Fiction reads

I'm reading "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and that'll probably be going on for the next 7 months! Heh heh.

    Strangest novel

The Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. They were completely strange and utterly delightful!

What's the WORST book you ever read?

Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich...couldn't get through it. >_< Also, there was this one author, I can't remember his name, who had a whole slew of books published that all took place in ancient Egyptian times and I thought the quality of writing was incredibly poor and well, amateur!

What's wrong with the public library?

I personally love the library. It's the greatest feeling to be surrounded by so many choices and know that it's all available to me for no charge! I can't justify buying books since I am not a rereader. It'd be a big waste of money, not to mention the books that I do have sitting on my shelf...

    Assigned Reading

I was assigned both books I enjoyed and books I ended up really not liking at all. The fact that they were assigned didn't really matter when it came to if I was going to enjoy it or not. I was exposed to some amazing books that I probably wouldn't have otherwise have picked up. "Their Eyes...

    national identity

Well, I think America has a lot of national pride, for the most part. But I can speak as a Texan, I think we probably have more state pride than most states. Texans always want to feel special about their state. They feel set apart, like everything is bigger and better here. They're proud to...

    How often do you read?

I only read one book at a time. It's hard for me to mix stories in my head by reading more than one book at a time. Ideally I'd like to read 100 pages a day, but that's usually not realistic because I've got so many hobbies. I find mainly my art takes up most of the time that I'd otherwise be...

We're coming to dinner, what's cookin?

I'm a southern girl. It'd be herb-marinated steak (garlic, celery salt, oregano, salt, pepper, lemon juice), baked potatoes as big as your head, biscuits, green bean casserole, and a homemade cherry pie for dessert (with a homemade piecrust of course)! Maybe a fruit salad too...or else my...

    Suspense/Thriller novels written by women?

Do you count Iris Johansen? Her books are generally thrillers. They're fluffy, fast reads, but I've loved every one! They usually have a strong female lead, a mysterious male co-star, and bad guys. lol She's one of my favorite authors. Comfort reads!

    Eragon

I read it and enjoyed it ok. I think, like the others said, it did copy many traditional fantasy story ideas, but then again, I see that in lots of fantasy authors' books. I thought the writing was a bit rough in places, but I attribute that to Chris Paolini's age. As he matures, his writing...

    historical fiction recommendations

I'll have to third "The Queen's Fool" by Philippa Gregory. That was my surprise favorite book of last year. It's very rare for a book to completely take me in to the point that I want to research the subject material, but after reading that, I couldn't get enough of Tudor England!

Do you judge a book by its cover?

I really loved the artwork Martin Springett did for the Fionavar Tapestry novels by Guy Gavriel Kay. http://www.brightweavings.com/artgallery/covfionavar.htm They're the ones at the top.

    Newbie :)

Hi Alice! Welcome to the group! I'm trying to start being more active myself here. Anyhow, from what I've been able to tell, there's a good mix of people. Personally, I'm a late twenties bookworm, though I do love to write.
