    Help!

Interesting advice, Stewart, which reminds me of another immensely useful one you gave me: Block or Recovery

    Blue Spud

Pretty good, novella. Catching dialogue, original. Must be part of something more, as Ell suggested? A novel, perhaps? Mh'h.

    Marketing books

Not if they are reputable. If you have no agent to go over your work before it reaches the publisher, and are not pre-commissioned by a given publisher for a given work, you might need someone professional to look it over before submitting it for consideration. I've had three different ones...

the book you cannot drop after you start the fist page?

Apparently, much of the book was written not in Cornwall, her domicile, but in a fierce Egyptian summer where she was both homesick and loathe to her wifely duties. This with a 'guilt sense of ineptitude' reflects aspects of Du Marier's own complex personality in her two characters, so Beauman...

old books - what do you do with them

Great works, I keep for life. Else donate to charity. Amazon marketplace is a good place to sell old books, if you wish; never tried it though.

    internet or book?

For one with a day job, internet 100%, with supertech sensors, as a lot of trash filters in the web too.

    What is a "good book"

Count me in. Halcyon's got a point. I read 'Shadow of the Lynx' 15 years ago, perhaps more - please don't ask my age - and recently purchased it and read it with as much enjoyment as I did then.

Is there a "good" self-published book?

Who, What defines 'great' Stew hun! The media? A nobel prize? Ever lifted a top twenty on Amazon and thought it sucked? Well, then. A writer - perhaps not yet 'great' by your standards? - that comes to mind is Deborah Lawrenson. Self-published 'The Art of Falling' through Stamp, in...

    Reading in the Bathtub

I love a good dunk with a bottle of wine - to formulate great thoughts  , not to read them. Furthermore, for one who loves the smell of new books, quite a kick, actually - not a fetish, mind you, they are too precious to risk ruining.

    Behaviour of the faceless man.

Like you, Ell, I'm just me. Hard to be otherwise without a pseudonym, but I prefer it this way. Hay82: you are quite amiable. Novella: No staples, please. You're doing just fine - shooting off your thoughts and coming up with good threads.

    Excerpt from my book

... penetrating my fog is very good imagery, well complemented by the next sentence. Ebba's a rather nice name.

    Thoughts into words/Wordless thoughts

Ah! A good writer. Passionate too.

What's wrong with the public library?

Flogging a dead and mummified horse. Last I stepped into a library was to do research on a thesis. Now I can do it online, and I wouldn't trust most libraries to stock what I want to read in the line of fiction. Bloody pain bringing a book back each time you borrow.

    Television Poem

True. The rhyming's good all round. It could do with a bit more imagery and more compression, though. Why butterflies? Is it an anticipation? Fear? Of what?
