Ah, Avidreader55, Ashlea, Lyra! Haven't read the book, but the movie came in two parts on telly and was amazing. I find it hard to watch a movie then read a book. Done it only once for Lolita.
Wabbit, you got it! House of Spirits is a brilliant book. I put it off for so long, but once I started, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It grabs you from the word go.
Lolita is another.
Love, Toni Morrison
Rebecca, without the introduction by Sally Beauman, which cheats the reader by already...
Hey Novella, great topic!
I started reading deeply after I grasped my own writing. I used to be a very fast reader, gobbling pages with a thirst for entertainment. Now, like yourself, I'm slow, and can replay verbatim, gazing out a bus window with a dreamy smile, brilliant scenes. Reading...
I once named a copper in a story, Morse. He was Corporal. My critique came back fast. 'Inspector Morse?' I had never before read an Inspector Morse series, nothing - I promise - from Colin Dexter. So where did it come from? I invariably had to rename my good fella, Corporal Moose, making...
Sci-fi, thriller/ suspense - we can talk. As for horror, my mind's too vivid. I search under the bed, literally, before blissful sleep. Stephen King? I avoid like the plague.
Your observation of a fresh pair of eyes is dead right, Cathy. I was so carried away in painting a scene, that none of those questions arose to me regarding dialogue. But tact would have saved a few weeks of stilted silence, given my sweat on the piece and the trashing of it.
As long as a plot sticks, I can stomach a lot, especially if the writing is classic. Lolita is an example of a masterful 'taboo' that transcends anything I've read in years.
Feel the same. Most of my reading is done commuting. This slows it down somewhat and builds anticipation. Hence I couldn't stick with something unappealing.
Well... I never spoke to them for three weeks.
And when my anger (& pride) diminished, I wrote a scene far better.
But - I must admit, Novella - I would have appreciated your approach far more.
Interbac: There! Novella and Cathy have spoken. I have appraisers, who act as editors in the sense that they come with plenty of meaningful feedback. By the time my book goes to an editor in a publishing house, they have little to say. I'll give you an example of one of the feedback in a...
Hey Novella, I'm working on crime fiction based in Scotland, surrounding a haunting Celtic mute. The protagonist, however, is a computer guru who shell scripts and is beginning a new life with an innovative project that he hopes to be a winner. Think you can eyeball a chapter? Think we can...
I once had an agent, interbac, who sent me a neat package of my work, all nice and revised - with a different ending. Colourful it was too.
It broke this camel's back, and first click was delete and trash; Agent never knew what hit him. Needless to say, I am without Agent now, with only...
Maybe you're already there, Xeon. Post something on the showcase, see it from another person's eyes. Once you find your voice, it doesn't really matter, as long as it says what you want to say.
