Not sure if it's appropriate, but the descriptor (for Stevens) that came to mind throughout the entire book was "tightass." The guy couldn't loosen up for anything -- not Miss Kenton, not his father dying, not a lighthearted American, not friendly strangers. He was pretty confident that that...
I started an herb garden last weekend. I've never done this before, so it'll be a learning experience, but I started the seeds on Sunday and I've already got some cute little sprouts coming up :) When they get bigger I'll transplant them to a planter on the patio.
I want to pick up some...
I felt bad for her, too. Even while they were working together under the same roof, he was never friendlier than "civil," and he teased her mercifully about the whole situation with the Jewish maids. Poor gal :(
I keep meaning to drop in on the book discussions that they have at my library, but I've been putting it off. I'm afraid that I'll walk in and be the only person under 45 (I'm 25), or that there will only be 2 other people there, or something like that. I'm just afraid that it'll completely suck...
I was really struck by the idea of what might have been. The whole novel, he's very certain about what a good butler is and what is dignified and he structures his entire life and self around these ideas. It's not until the end that I think he starts to see that his way is not the only way, that...
I think it's kind of cute how preoccupied he is with practicing "witticisms," lol. Reminds me of trying to fit in in middle school.
And yes, Robert, I totally agree with you :)
No kidding! What did you guys think about the scene where his dad suffered a stroke and died while Stevens was preoccupied waiting on his employer's guests??
What do you mean?
Not just negative emotion. What about his whole deal with Miss Kenton? He was clearly suppressing something there, so concerned with remaining dignified and a great, loyal butler that acting on, or even admitting to himself, his feelings for her was out of the question. As I was reading it...
Sweet. This is my first time participating in a book of the month discussion, so I'm stoked :) Unfortunately I'm not as far into the book as I'd like to be, so I'll hold off on comments of substance until later...

My TBR list SAVES me a lot of time, actually. Rather than stumble aimlessly into a library hoping to somehow come out with something worthwhile, I go in armed with printouts of catalog references for books that I've seen discussed on forums like this and looked up online. I spend 5 minutes...
I had a really, really hard time getting through Suite Francaise the first time I tried. I couldn't keep track of the characters or focused on their stories long enough to get emotionally involved. I eventually ended up giving up and returning it to the library without getting a third of the way...
Hurry Down Sunshine, by Michael Greenberg
The Remains of the Day , by Kazuo Ishiguro
Dirt Music, by Tim Winton
The Water's Lovely, by Ruth Rendell

I knew the second I saw the title of this thread that someone was going to talk about this book :) I know I'm definitely the minority here, and I don't think I've found anyone else who didn't mind the ending, but I have to say that I appreciated it. I think it would have been sooooo easy to tie...
I remember that story! I LOVED it. Good story to read to kids, I'm pretty sure our teacher read it to my class.
We watched a cartoon version of it later in the year and I hated it, it didn't match up to my imagined version very well. It was my first introduction to the fact that books are...
