I personally prefer not to have an extensive library at my home. It's just too difficult when you move to a new place. I'm glad to get books out of the public library and just as glad to take them back.
The way I see it is that there's literature and there's commercial fiction. There's a place for both, and some very cool writers manage to combine the best of both.
J.K. Rowling writes commerical fiction. It's meant to entertain. Most "crime" and "mystery" fiction is also commercial fiction...
The first two books of this series (Goodkind's) are really page turners. The third book is weaker, but the fourth book is a page-turner again. After that though, I lost interest, and I hear that they go downhill from there.
Well, there are academic books, yes... but then there's the difference between supposedly "literary" fiction (which is considered more high brow) and "commercial" fiction (which is considered mass pop culture stuff).
Getting comfortable when reading has often been a problem for me as I tend to toss and turn when reading just like I do when trying to get to sleep. The other problem is that when I finally do get comfortable, I often fall asleep while reading.
My solution on both counts is audiobooks.
I find that I read much faster if I listen to the audio version. I load the book onto my MP3 player, and then I can "read" when I'm running errands, waiting for the bus, doing housework... in general, I can multi-task by reading during mindless activities when I otherwise wouldn't be able to...
Acutally, I was reading something recently that said, contrary to popular predictions, that the internet has actually increased demand through print books through sites like Amazon and communities (I guess, like this one). I think people are way too resistent to e-books.

Where do you get your books, the library? That's the only way I can feel okay about abandoning a book. Otherwise I feel like I need to get my money's worth.
