Books you've read before you had any knowlege of an upcoming movie based on the book.

Hmm, this could date some of us... ok-The Exorcist. There have been quite a few over the years, most recently, No Country for Old Men. Lots of children's books would be included in this too. The Golden Compass; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Harry Potter series; Series of...

There's colloquy but it doesn't mean that. You sure about the meaning?

What's your favourite word? And worst?

This word was featured in a Simpson's episode. It was third on Grandpa Simpson's list of guesses and he whines it out when asked what's wrong with Marge. Piquant little joke.

    old west indian killers

Sounds a lot like Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.

Have you read all the books by any particular author(s)?

Yes, it is. I thought it was elegantly understated, you little Christmas banana. Think Lauren Bacall.... Amazon indicates that it is indeed in the volume entitled Naked. And no stinkin' setups there!:)

Have you read all the books by any particular author(s)?

It's not really all that difficult, just start with the buttons. I can't recall which collection had in it a story called The Drama Bug but whichever it was, that is the funniest story known to mankind. I've said it a million times, I'll probably say it a million more. I love the ending which...

    Free Rice

I heard a news story about this site. That it started out as a way to expand the vocabularies of the man's two children. With its popularity they have decided soon to expand the word pool with more advanced words. I heard it on PBS but don't recall which program, darn it. KQED.

Have you read all the books by any particular author(s)?

Philip K. Dick Barbara Kingsolver Walter Mosely Louise Erdrich Isaac Bashevis Singer David Sedaris Fay Weldon John Mortimer Philip Pullman, almost and took a pretty good chunk out of Charles Dickens. Oh - J. K. Rowling...yeah. I also plan on reading all of P. G. Wodehouse and have...

    Free Rice

Only as described above-astronomically inclined daughter nearby. I gave her a few old lady words, so it was mutual cheating.

    Free Rice

I played to 2000 and had a high score of 49. Well, my high-scoring daughter and I were playing at adjacent computers, boosting each others scores...It was pretty dang fun really and giving rice too-wow. I've been playing boggle at boggled.org for the last couple of weeks and no...

No. Well, we gave them an inch, you know.

    Choose your mammal!

Our house is run by guinea pigs. Surely you don't assert that they are mere henchmammals. They are pretty dignified and cruel. Frankly I find it hard to imagine a lemmimg or a donkey giving them orders... I'm not voting because I'm a skeptic of your "donkey" theory. It's guinea pigs, fairly cert.

    golden compass

The Golden Compass remains one of my all-time favorite books. It has in it everything one could wish in adventure, characters and interaction; and it is not a children's, but a young adult book - in my library, anyway. My opinion of the author is consequently very high. In his own words...

Do you buy, borrow or take out from the library?

I borrow from the library almost exclusively. I only buy second-hand and only authors or stories or subjects that are familiar enough to be a sure thing. This year I bought new twice; used, about eight; and borrowed sixty plus. Librarians, I heart you.

Today is 'Bhut Chaturdashi', Hindu version of Halloween

Well, I hope lots of sweets were had by all. Ghosts are all well and good but without the sweets...not as much fun, I would think. Is this holiday supposed to be fun?

    My Current TBR List...

I read Angle of Repose a few years ago and recall that it's not really something that everyone would enjoy. Sort of ponderous and depressing. If you'd like to try a Wallace Stegner, my favorite of his is Big Rock Candy Mountain, a story set in Prohibition, on the Canadian border; it has some...

    J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows **CONTAINS SPOILERS**

I was very happy to see Molly Weasley take out LeStrange. Ambivalent about her cry as she attacked since it seemed a little lurid. Neville was much too important a character to do anything less than hack out the final horcrux. I hated the epilogue. I infinitely prefer being left to my...

H.P.& The Deathly Hallows midnight party-to go or not to go?

Spoilers? My daughter came rushing in from work Friday night, dragging along her friend. Apparently they had just dodged a spoiler plane! A revolving message and she read the word Snape - that's when she ran. I was speechless. This is a true story. It happened right here, but I haven't yet heard...

    Isaac Bashevis Singer

It's a long time since I've read him, but what a writer. His book of children's stories called The Fools of Chelm was a sweet read for me and the kids. The people have great names like Dopey Leikish and Treitel Fool and they spend lots of time figuring out how to solve their "problems". His...
