Umberto Eco: The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana

I finally finished. This was a frustrating read for me. There was much to like - the early discussion about the nature of memory, Yambo's return to his childhood country home in Solara, the WW II portion as he struggles to determine whether he was a true fascist, his inability to reconcile...

    Symbolic Boots

Sitaram, my comments about your posts has nothing to do with forum rules. I was only suggesting that the way in which you present your new threads makes it difficult for some to enter into a dialogue with you. You are not a guest, but a member of TBF. I was not suggesting that you stop...

    Symbolic Boots

Sitaram, I'll echo what the other two have said. I hope you take this as a constructive criticism. It's obvious that you're passionate about books, literature and ideas. You post interesting topics, but it's a bit daunting to get through all the links and quotes. It's like you've...

Yeah, so what? You and whose army of wasabi shrimps?

And for what purpose would you be doing this? Oh wait, I almost missed it -- to make this place more salubriously enchanting. Right.

That would make it Bootie Girdle-tush.

Question about Foundation series and other question about sci fi novels!

I agree with Mari. I don't remember any battle scenes in the Foundation series. I also read them a long time ago, so maybe of just forgotten. If there were any, they weren't a major part of the stories.

Thread will close September 1. A maximum of ten books will be put to the vote. If more than 10 books are suggested, then books which have more than one nomination will take priority (books with three nominations get priority over books with two etc.) The remainder will be put forward in...

Which films or books have challenged the way you think?

Sar, try these: Non-fiction Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. He examines the course of human history and the emergence of industrial/technological societies from a geo-biological perspective. Thought-provoking for those of us who've been educated with a western European bias...

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

Robert, thanks for the Top Ten link. That should hold me until the real hockey starts. :D As for LeClair, I'm sure a good part of the reason they signed him was to give some veteran leadership and guidance to a young team - esp. Sidney Crosby. I don't envy Sidney, he's going to have an...

    TBF's "Troll" trouble

Stewart, you're hurting my feelings. :( Really, the best way to deal with troll-like behaviour is to ignore it. Trolls only thrive when people respond by taking their bait. The 'ignore' feature helps you avoid posts from those you find aggravating. The downside is that you might miss...

    incest novels

Anne-Marie MacDonald's 'Fall On Your Knees' is not about incest per se, but it's a central theme. Can't say it's neutral, though.

What do you pay for gas?

It may be true for you, but around here the weather is mild year-round and very few people really *need* those types of vehicles. Mostly, I see people with +++ disposable income and a new status toy. All they do is drive in the city to work or shopping! I mean, really, how many people need a...

What do you pay for gas?

The problem is they (the gas-guzzlers) affect all of us. They increase demand, thereby driving up the price which then affects everybody's price at the pump. So, in effect we are footing their gas bill.

What do you pay for gas?

We're paying $1.10 CAD per litre which converts to about $3.48US per gallon!!! It would help if people stopped driving gas-guzzling tanks.
