    Hunter S. Thompson

He`ll be missed. Love him or hate him, he put "balls" into writing! He was brought up with a great respect for literature, including Jack London, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Kerouac. When I read his "Hells Angels", It blew me away, especially the last page or two, "The legacy of...

What is the Scariest Horror fiction you've ever read???

"Ditto" Lovecraft! Terror on a grand scale! I think the Victorian settings make it even creepier. To read about the masters of the genre, check out Stephen King`s "Danse Macabre", where King acknowledges his influences.

    I just finished reading...

Jenem, Dandelion Wine has always been a "magical" book in my mind also. Some people lament the lack of a plot, but the quality of the book is in the writing, the nostalgia, and the human feelings. I`ll bet you like it better on your second reading (Yes, you`ll read it again!). I`ve been through...

    Favorite Poem Project

How about a little "Gunga Din"... Gunga Din You may talk o' gin and beer When you're quartered safe out 'ere, An' you're sent to penny-fights an' Aldershot it; But when it comes to slaughter You will do your work on water, An' you'll lick the bloomin' boots of 'im that's got it. Now in...

    eBooks vs Regular Books

Real books have some things "E-books" will never have; The tactile impressions of receiving your older siblings` or parents` old books. The smells, feel of the bindings, illustrations (beautiful old line drawings..! ) Even cheap paperbacks give a nice sense of time passage with their brittle...

    Classics that disappoint

Should the thread be titled "Classics that disappoint", or "Classics that are misunderstood"?

    Who is the best lord?

I don`t think that Lord Michael Flatley would mind being trounced by the great Mr. Tolkien! :)

    Confessions of a book sniffer

NOTHING smells quite like a new National Geographic! Open, and appreciate that inky aroma! :D Dan-o

What do you use as a bookmark?

Mr. Crusoe, your last post made an impression on me. Considering the time, effort, and spirit that an author invests in his work, it`s well that you appreciate it so much! There`re certainly a lot of books I rush through, that deserve more attention. Cheers! Dan-o

has there been any movie that was......

Has anyone ever seen the televised version of "It", by Stephen King? I thought it was very well done. Only one thing- in the book, the final showdown was a battle with this powerful evil force that transcended time and space, but in the televised version, I almost fell out of my chair laughing...

    My latest non-fiction buys.

Ian, Thanks for the info! I didn`t know that there was another version of "The Great Escape." I just ordered it! If you haven`t read the classic "The Great Escape", by Paul Brickhill, you must read it! Incredible! Also, in this book, Brickhill recommends another escape book called "The Wooden...

What are you reading - March/April?

Just finished "The Bonfire of the Vanities" A rollercoaster of a book:p Does Tom Wolfe have anything else that`s as good? Just getting into "Samurai William". It's the true story behind James Clavell`s "Shogun". It`s mostly from the European point of view, and nowhere as fun as Clavell`s...

    Do you read non-fiction?

For some really interesting non-fiction, check out John Mcphee. His essays run the gamut, and then some! How about a whole book covering the orange! Sounds deadly dull, until you get into it a few pages:D I guess it`s partly his writing style that`s so keen-o, and also the anecdotes, and the...

    Best "Macho Movie"?

No question about it- "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"

    Umberto Eco

I liked "The Name of the Rose". It was really immersive, you really felt as if you were in the abbey. It was obviously very well researched. Sort of a whodunnit among the monks! A bit gory at times, but also quite a few moments of monkish humor. Very original!

    Herman Hesse

"The Glass Bead Game"! Regarded by some as being Hesse`s masterpiece. It`s a long read but it wasn`t long enough:) It also won the Nobel Prize in 1946. "I hear music and see men of the past and future. I see wise men...

    Hellooooooo!

Hi, fellow book-o-philes! I`m Daniel, 41. I live amongst the cornfields of Illinois. Sort of a solitary place, but it fits my personality, I guess. I`m a welder by trade, love my books and music! I think some of the most simple books are some of the most magical; "Dandelion Wine", "Cannery...

What do you use as a bookmark?

I always fold the corners, so I suppose I`m in the minority. Re-reading dog eared books in no way diminishes the content.:D Anyway, I think that some authors feel somewhat flattered to see one of their books so well worn!
