I too have a very old version of this book, though I believe the illustrations are different. I don't think its worth too much, though on eBay its going for various prices depending on the edition.
Just to name a few...
The Man without Qualities - Robert Musil
This guy is the German Proust
Petersburg - Andre Bely
And heres the Russian Joyce.
Death of Virgil - Hermann Broch
Excellent book. Written while the author was in a concentration camp.
Street of Crocodiles - Bruno Schulz...
I'd say Gatsby (The Great Gatsby), The Underground Man (Notes from the Underground), and Holden Caufield (Catcher in the Rye)...Heh, seems I liken myself to literature's biggest jerks...Oh well, goes with my avatar.
The Man without Qualities - Robert Musil.
Death of Virgil - Hermann Broch
Petersburg - Andrey Bely
And probably a few others. These three are 20th century masterpieces. Petersburg, for example, is similar to and predates Ulysses and is much better.
I've started In Search of Lost Time by Proust but will probably not finish it til later this year. From what I've heard, its the longest ever. Other than that, I'd say the longest I've read would be Lord of the Rings or Ulysses.
I read mostly classics:
1. Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
2. The Way by Swann's - Marcel Proust
3. Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad
4. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
5. On the Road - Jack Keroac
6. The Divine Comedy - Dante
7. Ulysses - James Joyce
8. The Great Gatsby - F. Scott...
Here are a few of my favourites, I can't really say why I like them.
I also love the Number 9 Dreams cover and a pink and white edition of Proust that I couldn't find.
I'll second that, SFG, I just don't enjoy Bellow at. I'll also say Lord of the Rings, as well as Waiting for Godot. I'm a little bit fond of the latter, but its seriously overrated.
And her other books are just goth crap...
Anyway, I'm glad that she has gone in this direction. I can't stand books about vampires and serial killers and so forth.
I've don't think there are any that I plot points or themes or settings that I prefer, but there are certainly some that make me avoid books (vampires, serial killers, the occult etc).
