Writers whose cult following freaks you out

Heh, heh, good old Greenspan. Anyway, I'll also add Tolkien and, to some extent, Phillip K. Dick (not a large cult, but certainly a vicious one).

    Undiscovered Wonders

The Man without Qualities - Robert Musil. Death of Virgil - Hermann Broch Petersburg - Andrey Bely And probably a few others. These three are 20th century masterpieces. Petersburg, for example, is similar to and predates Ulysses and is much better.

What is the longest book/work you've ever read?

I've started In Search of Lost Time by Proust but will probably not finish it til later this year. From what I've heard, its the longest ever. Other than that, I'd say the longest I've read would be Lord of the Rings or Ulysses.

    Bookcovers

Here are a few of my favourites, I can't really say why I like them. I also love the Number 9 Dreams cover and a pink and white edition of Proust that I couldn't find.

What book do you hate but everybody else loves?

I'll second that, SFG, I just don't enjoy Bellow at. I'll also say Lord of the Rings, as well as Waiting for Godot. I'm a little bit fond of the latter, but its seriously overrated.

    Anne Rice

And her other books are just goth crap... Anyway, I'm glad that she has gone in this direction. I can't stand books about vampires and serial killers and so forth.

    Fyodor Dostoevsky

Perhaps Notes from the Underground, its the most universal of his works after Crime and Punishment and Karamazov.

My father owns about a million African books, but I think one of the better ones is The Palm Wine Drinkard by Amos Tutola.
