Many characters remind me of myself in some ways but most notably I would say Gatsby and The Underground Man, as well as a detective from a John Grisham novel whose name I cannot remember.

There you go.
I know the story, but have never read the book.
jay, could you please tell me why you dislike religous references (or perhaps just characters based on spiritual figures)? Not that I wish to argue with you or anything, just that a friend and I were discussing this the other day.
On the topic, I think that Harry Potter is better than a lot...
I don't think they'll die out. I usually buy books from small shops etc, because it takes too long for the books to get here. In fact, I ordered some books from amazon six months ago and they still haven't arrived!
Of course, I wasn't saying they couldn't tell the story isn't fiction, just that the I wouldn't want any bad ideas that might be in the book to be passed on to children at a young age. I'm mean the sort of age when they're easily impressionable. Once someone is older than eight or so I think...
You would have your children read a book that could potentially skew their views and sense of morals? Not to say this is the deal with HP, but it can't hurt to check.

That link should be of some help.
As for the court case, I suppose its innocent until proven guilty, though I can find no reason for not going under oath unless he is guilty. Though you would think that someone who has already...
I think Catch-22 totally deserves its reputation. Its a book that will be funny forever. Then again, I haven't read Something Happened, whats it about?
But those books have reputations and people tend to expect something when they pick them up. Besides, I don't think anyone would actually remember the real worst book they've ever read and if they did nobody would have heard of it :p
Hvae you tried The Silmarllion (sp?)? I too loved The Hobbit and disliked LOTR but I tried the Silmarillion and enjoyed it despite the odd style of writting.
