I suppose Ayn Rand and objectivism fits into this category. I've never read any of her books but I'm a little familiar with the philosophy.
Sciencetolgy (sp?) is an interesting and contreversial religion. I think there are a few books out by its founder, L. Ron Hubbard.
I'm not old or an expert or anything but I think its because sf and fantasy appeal to younger people mainly. Don't get me wrong, I love fantasy and sci fi but I can see why people don't consider them real classics.
Although it could also be that fantasy and sf both require an imangination...
