*weep* Forced to read boring school approved books...

Litany has a good idea. Go to amazon.com and read a wide variety of reviews posted for each book. Do not just read the 'good' reviews or just the 'bad' ones, but a few from each. Then make your choice, for this method gives you a more even and less biased approach. There's nothing worse than...

How much books do you read per year?

I agree as well. At least, when reading for pure hobby and enjoyment. Is it a race to read those 100 books on your shelf? I can see speed reading to be very beneficial at other times. A lawyer, for example, would have a great advantage by being capable of speed reading. Adversely, I think...

    shannara series by terry brooks????

I fell into that trap too and found out I had bought Lord of the Rings instead . . . no, wait . . .

    Wilbur Smith

Not too sure what bobby is saying . . . Anyway, that's unfortunate that the sequel brings about how over exaggerated the story was. Though, had I known this while reading the book I don't think I would have kept going. I still found the situation to be almost farcical, and prodigiously...

    Reading in October

The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester is my next in line. Been anticipating reading this novel for quite some time. First, have about 90 more pages to read in Clive Barker's Imajica, which has been an excellent story. The Dominions are just about to be reconciled! Ohhhhhh.....

“He was a giant among pygmies. But perhaps it’s right that all his work and greatness should die with him. Isn’t man but a blossom taken by the wind, and only the mountains and the sea and the stars and this Land of the Gods real and everlasting?” James Clavell - Shogun

the books last 5 years old that turned you on

Dandelion Wine was fabulous! Good on ya Jenem for reading it. I remember it was a Saturday, this past July, when I read the entire book, twice, in one day. The only other book I have done that with, ironically enough, was Fahrenheit 451 - also by Bradbury.

    Wilbur Smith

The one novel I have read by him was River God, at request of my grandfather. I am afraid I found this book awful and I don't care to read any more Wilbur Smith any time soon. Unfortunately, (or not, depending on how you look at it) I'm somewhat of a history buff and take, very seriously...

How much books do you read per year?

I also read constantly but at a much slower pace. Partly due to school and partly due to the fact that I really take an introspective look into grasping the novel or text that I'm reading. I've had a good year if I'm able to read over a dozen novels. Fictitious that is. Besides for the...

George R. R. Martin: A Song Of Ice And Fire

This thread's going to have the fantasy readers coming out the woodwork! The series is superb. No doubt about it. If I were Robert Jordan or Terry Goodkind I would seriously consider improving my writing style because they hold nothing against this guy. I do want to say though that his...

    boys books

Not to belittle Ashlea's recommendations but I remind everyone that he is only ten. Michael Crichton, I think, is too advanced for any ten year old. (A lot of adults don't understand what is written in novels such as The Andromeda Strain, let alone youngsters) Some of the first novels that...

    Science Fiction and Fantasy

Most good authors always point out "important human ideas". Read novels by Ursula Le Guin, Roger Zelazny, Clive Barker, Leo Tolstoy or practically any author who has been around for a long time and/or has a broad range of readers. “It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the...

    King Arthur

There seems to be many conflicting stories which have been released over the years about King Arthur. Countless sagas and novels have been written either directly about him or about his kingdom of Camelot. It's best to keep in mind that there is a whole premise about Arthur that, one, he...

    Yann Martel: Life of Pi

Opinion Hey all, just came across this site and thought this thread is as good as any to post my first ...um... post. I read Life of Pi about a month ago and I wrote a personal review of the novel after I had finished it. I do this after all books I read for comparison reasons. This is...
