I'll freely admit that Fforde is fluffy. But I think the first book is pretty strong. It makes for great bedtime/beach reading. But, again, merely my humble opinion. And I was actually dissapointed with the topic of the new book as well. I was hoping for something - well - new. Has anyone...
Right on! I should finish it this weekend, and I can tell that it's getting good.
Just started Fortress of Solitude on the streetcar this morning and I think I am going to like it.
Ditto here. I am reading it now and after three months am finally nearing the end. I am enjoying it, though there are bits that bother me a tad (though generally I can't pinpoint exactly why). I'd be interested in hearing what you other folks think.
That's for sure. Definitely lots of stuff for adult readers. Great character and plot development, and the world he creates for the characters is pretty fantastic. And it's fairly violent in some places, if I remember correctly - if you're into that.
What I'm trying to say - read it!
Hello Emmer and welcome to the Forum! You're in the right place - there seem to be tons of sci-fi/fantasy fans here. What are some of your favorite books?
After about three months, I am finally nearing the end of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. I'm really enjoying it, but after this time investment there had better be one killer ending.
No kidding. I was hoping I wouldn't get completely hooked on this place . . . no chance of that now. I am getting zero work done. And my office is small, so I'm sure they know I'm up to something.
I was history and anthropology as well, jenn. And Sheila Andrews was great. Didn't take her course (it was an 8:30! In the morning!) but went to a couple of lectures she did.
And I'll debate you on the Social Club. The Celler was my hangout ;)
I'm in a similar boat, Kooka. My boyfriend isn't much of a reader, and yet (also luckily) he's one of the smartest guys I know. It's not that he doesn't read - he reads a book every few months or so - he just doesn't have nearly the same voracious appetite for them that I do.
Also, he...
Fforde
Oh Jay, how could you say such things? :D I agree that the first is best, but I got rather attatched to the characters and don't think the slope you speak of is particularly steep. I found all the books enjoyable and am looking forward to reading the new one. As you say, its a...
I think Barnes has the dry British wit down pat. A warning though, his stuff can be a little pretentious (so there is the possibility of annoyance). But I’m still a fan. I’ll give you the rundown of my three faves:
History of the World in 10.5 Chapters: This is a collection of short...
the brits
If you're looking for brit writers, my fave of all time is Julian Barnes. Perhaps not beach reading though. If you wanted one, England England or Talking it over would be most appropriate, methinks.
Have you read any Nick Hornby? He's pretty entertaining, particularly High...
