Depression books
I wanted to thank everyone who responded (and anyone who wished they could but didn't happen to know of any books ;) ). I believe I have a better understanding of depression now, and have recommended some to others in our family. After reading some pretty horrific...
passion
No, but other historical sources have given detailed information about scourging and crucifixion to give us the idea. This movie made me think, for those who believe in the Bible, that the Bible's level of detail (kind of scant, as you said) makes it easy for one to gloss over the...
Curious incident
I'm just going to say what a lot of others have said, but the POV is excellent. I work with mentally disabled teens, and Haddon does a wonderful job capturing that personality and (what we can assume) is going on inside the mind.
Books you won't let your kids read
Some of it depends on the kid. My oldest child is 9, and we have read the first Harry Potter together. I have read all of them. Although I won't say I'd never let her read the others, I do want her to wait for a while because they do get progressively...
books
I like to read just one at a time and concentrate on it until I am done. I am in a quandary at the moment because after I was about 50 pages into a new book, I got an interlibrary loan book I had been waiting for and I need to start it so I am done with it on time.
My 9-year old...
Libraries
May I ask those of you who haven't already shared their library-horror experiences why you don't use a library? I would never be able to afford to read if I had to buy all my books, and many of the books I read are not good enough to keep anyway-- and some of them are awful enough I...
Ella
I saw the movie with my 9 year old daughter. We both liked it. Well, she says she loved it. I thought it was cute, and a lot of my enjoyment of it came from knowing that my daughter was enjoying it. It seemed a bit more "flip" with modern references as someone said above (the cast...
classic dross
I am with you on Heart of Darkness and Lord of the Rings. But it think that Nathaniel Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables is the winner-- or is that the loser?
Question
Wow. Getting an answer was actually surprisingly easy, and next time I won't fret my pretty little head if I have to wait a little bit. ;)
Next question: How can I stop my very active toddler from driving me crazy?
Question
Oh, dear, I was so looking forward to finding out the answer to this burning question-- but alas, there is no answer for me. Today's question: What's a gal gotta do to get a question answered around here?
Lord of the Flies
I don't know about obscene, but I can go along with gruesome. However, does it seem unlikely? Can't you imagine boys (not to pick on boys, just referencing the text ;) ) getting out of control like that? Not all boys, naturally. And of course, the naval officer at the...
5 people...
It was interesting to think about how people could have had a big influence on you and you not know about them; or how you could have influenced people and not realized it yourself. It is a fairly quick read, and I remember getting a little teary-eyed toward the end.
Otherland
I really liked these books, although I can still agree with Litany's assessment that some editing and whittling it down a bit would have made it better. I read them all back-to-back, so I remember feeling a little burnt-out on them, but I didn't want to wait too long in between...
Good Omens
I am with Hannibal, in that I wasn't as thrilled as many other people were. I liked it, but I didn't love it. At times, it felt confusing to have to hold all the characters in my head before I knew whether they needed to be held or not-- we met the 4 Horsemen, for example, it almost...
Good Omens
I just read that last night. He said it was the way a VietNam veteran felt about a Neighborhood Watch member in fatigues.
I'm finding that I keep getting struck with "little lines" (Paraphrasing): She was beautiful the way a fire is beautiful-- you don't want to get to close...
I just saw it and didn't read this thread ahead of time, so it gives me 4 pages of stuff I want to comment on!
Someone several pages ago wondered if the violence were that brutal back then. I understand that the practice of scourging was even *more* violent than we saw-- that flesh would be...

Book
Your book looked interesting-- I have a fourth-grader living in my house and look at all children's books through the lens of "Would-Liz-like-it?" I also didn't imagine "running into" someone on the Internet who knows Fitchburg, MA.
I am looking for a good, simple book about depression, and specifically about living with someone who is depressed. A family member is dealing with this suddenly. I have found some titles, but have no way of knowing how good they are. Thank you for any help.
