ABSOLUTELY. I finally read it last year. I don't know why I let this one sit unread for long. It is one of the best books I have ever read. My reading copy was an old, tattered paperback. I have since purchased a new hardback for my permanent collection.
Guns, Germs...
I have this one sitting on my TBR shelf too. I've heard such excellent things about this book. I just have so many choices I haven't picked it up as yet. Hope to get to it this year also. :p
Hi back... you might want to also check out the BookCrossing site. There are quite a few members in Scotland. They sound like a fun crew.
I'm relatively new here too.
So... "Hi"
Found this site last year but I am only now really jumping in.
So... just "waving Hi" from Arizona. Hope to have more time this year to peruse the forums, get to know everyone, and talk books !!!
Stars - I'm reading my first book by Anchee Min, entitled "Katherine". (Actually this is an audio book, which I am listening to in my car !) I am just mesmerized. I have a collection of books about China, and this is one of the best I have read about how the change-over from the Cultural...
I occasionally re-read favorites (Spring Moon iby Betty Bau Lord is one, Rebecca by Daphne duMaurier is another). When I was a child, some of my books were tattered from re-reading (Little Women). There are so many books I have read in the past year or so, which I have since passed them along...
You hit it right on. To my son (27), computer technology is as natural as breathing. He and I have the book/VS computer "battle" all the time. I do need to keep up and should take advantage of knowing several young, very computer literate, young adults. It all changes so fast... the energy...
I'm behind on the latest technology and have never used a Blackberry. It might, as you say, be a great way to read. It would depend on the size of the print - (small screen, right?).
I like the idea of the portablility. That's a different issue than sitting here at my PC - too confining for...
Without a doubt, memoirs.
Recently read: The Road From Coorain by Jill Ker Conway, Almost There by Nuala O'Faolain; Travels of an Independant Woman by Alice Steinbach;Peking Story by David Kidd
I simply can't sit at my computer and read a book. It has to be a BOOK - real, physical, in my hands.
Here is a bit I got my from my computer-nut son when we were having the same debate. It is priceless:
Announcing the new Built-in Orderly Organized Knowledge Device

I buy a lot of used books
I belong to BookCrossing (making the world a library - releasing books for others to find just for the fun of it), so I really buy a lot of used books.
I also trade books with others BCers.
However, I can't stay out of bookstores. I buy books for friends as gifts...
Right now I am deeply relating to Elizabeth Berg. My "favorite" author is sort of a rolling favorite. There are some I will always respect and enjoy (Leon Uris, Harper Lee, ...) but my flavor-of-day changes with where I am in my life. Berg speaks to my heart; I wouldn't have related 20 years...
Thanks to everyone who popped in to say "hi"
Still feeling my way around. It's 109 here today and the cable service has been up and down (don't know why, but heat seems to affect it). Taking advantage of an "up" moment to come back to the site.
Hi - I'm new here too.
Based on what you have said, you might like the Barbara Taylor Bradford series of books beginning with A Woman of Substance (the next one is To Hold The Dream). They are light reading, but fun.
For a bit more bite you could try These Is My Words by Nancy Turner...
Just discovered this site. Looks intriguing. Haven't taken the time yet to have a good look around, but I will. Since it's 103 here - will be 109 by the weekend (about 42.7 C for those out of the U.S.), I'll be spending more time indoors, with the A/C running, which translates into more time...
