How soon after one book do you start your next?

I always have to take a little bit of time to just "digest" the book. I'd probably start another one the next day - or maybe even sooner if I was feeling relaxed enough. It just feels wrong to read two books in the same day though - think of your morals!!!! LOL I am actually having a real...

    Pictures of my library

Wow - that's excellent. I love the double stacking personally...none of this neatly lined up books for me. Probably comes from being the rebellious daughter of a librarian - lol. Have to say the best thing about your library though is.....Bernadette. What an absolute beauty. Give her a...

    Scariest Book Ever?

Well, i don't read Horror really. but the book that affected me most and gave me a few sleepless nights as "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. I don't really find HORROR frightening, I get more frightened and disturbed reading pyschological / real stories.

    Donating books

I save mine up for a while and then take them to the local Oxfam bookshop....good opportunity to stock up again as well whilst I'm there. Our local one closed down just before Christmas and is due to open again in LARGER premises this month......this means MORE books!!! YAY!

Book of the Month Jan-Jun 2004

For May perhaps we could have "Ruby Fruit Jungle" by Rita MAE Brown... Fantastic book, but tenuous "may" link there from the sausage!

At what point does non-ficton become fiction?

Another excellent example of "faction" is "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. Although it is largely factual, and he followed the Clutter murder case closely....there is a lot of the text which is extremely descriptive and can only be based on how he imagines things to have happened.

    Book Club Recommendations

Rush Home Road - Lori Lansens , although I'm not sure how many pages it is. Anything by Elizabeth Berg - but especially "Open House" Or "Here on Earth" by Alice Hoffman

    Why "Boo"

I don't know actually. Is it because he is seen as a scary "ghostly" character who is only ever seen occasionally and makes people jump? Or did his actual family refer to him as Boo as well. I'm trying to remember what Atticus calles him, and am fairly certain he refers to him as Mr Arthur...

    Hello!!

I imagine it's to do with the whole "S" thing....that he thought (in his infinite wisdom obviously :P) that Sally and Sausage sounded good together.... We recently moved (back to his old town) so all the friends we have here have only ever known me as "sausage" or "sausages" - it's a bit daft...

    Hello!!

Ha ha! Well, there is no explanation really! My other half has called me "Sausages" for as long as I've known him...and now all my friends and a large sum of my family call me it too! The irony of it being - I'm a vegetarian of some 14 years!!!

    Hello!!

You're all so welcoming - thanks! Ashlea - the only author, of the ones you mentioned, who I have read is Bobbie Ann Mason. I had to read "In Country" for a module of my degree course "Women writers and the American South" ( ha! - that's to blame!) "In Country" was just fantastic - it's...

    Hello!!

Thanks for the welcomes Murhpyz and Blade - much appreciated! :D I have "deviated" from the small town American writing on occasion, but ALWAYS find myself drawn back to it!! I would love to read more by women from other cultures and should make it my new years resolution to do so! My 78...

    Hello!!

Hi, I joined the forum a few days ago, but hadn't spotted this thread!! I am currently reading Elizabeth Berg's "Until the Real thing comes along". She is one of my favourite writers at the moment. I love contemporary American women writers who tend to write about "small town"...

Book of the Month Jan-Jun 2004

Colin Bateman is a good contemporary Irish author. His books are darkly humourous. If you're looking for a non-taxing read I'd recommend "Divorcing Jack" or "The cycle of Violence"

    Disillusioned graduates / downshifting

I've only just found/joined this form and this thread REALLY interested me. I left teaching in May of last year. I had been teaching in a large inner city comprehensive secondary school for almost five years. The reasons I decided to leave are multiple, and David has covered them really. In...
