As long as you teach the child to understand that fiction is not reality, I say let them read what they want. Depending on the age of the child and the book they're reading, most of the stuff will probably be over their heads anyways. I know I've re-read books I read when I was younger, and I...
I dabble in exercise. I do yoga once a week (I'd love to do more if I had the time), plus I get up at 4am to hit the gym and do either cardio (treadmill) or weight lifting before work. Since I work and go to school at night, I have to find time to work out, or I'll be the biggest slug ever...
I haven't checked out books from the library in years. I'm horrible about returning things on time, plus I don't have time during the week to return things, so I'd constantly be paying late fees. I'd rather just browse through the local bookstores looking for good books to read.
I've thrown a few books away, mainly because I hadn't gotten around to taking books to the used bookstore. Now that I know where one is, if I buy books and don't like them, I'll just take them up there.
James Reese did this in his horrible book Book of Shadows. The name of the convent the main character stayed at was always abbreviated C__. That, among many other things in this book, drove me batty. I couldn't finish it.
I keep a list of all the books on my shelf that are waiting to be read. Sometimes I'll go down the list and pick out what hits me, or if I can't decide, I tell my husband to pick a number between 1-40 and read what he picks.
I do that same thing, too, only it's usually just the size to fit paperbacks. I buy hardbacks, but not as frequently, and between my wallet, notepad, various pens, and some makeup, I didn't want to feel like I was carting around a suitcase on my shoulder.
I don't usually get books for Christmas. I think it's because people don't know what I have, so they don't get me any, but then I also don't gift cards, either :(
I give my dad books, as he never knows what to get when he goes to the local bookstore, and we have the same tastes in books, so...
I organize mine into non-fiction and fiction. The non-fiction are then grouped by subject and shelved alphabetically by subject, and then sub-organized by author's last name. My hardback books are shelved according to author's last name. My fiction books are separated into genres, then...
I picked up East of Eden because, being an English major, I felt that I was inadequate to my major for not having read any of the classics. I thought about reading Of Mice and Men, but it was so short I felt like I would be cheating. So I read East of Eden. That is truly a phenomenal book...
The guy at my local Barnes and Noble keeps trying to get me to read the Anita Blake and Merry Gentry series. I just can't bring myself to spend my money on it knowing how it eventually ends up. I'm all for a good sex romp in a book, but if the plot is loosely drawn together so the author can...
You can also try Simon Green's Nightside series, or Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series. Both are urban fantasy like Butcher's, with the same wry, sardonic main characters.
A Wrinkle in Time is definitely high up on the list of my favorite books. I always thought about reading the others in the series, but I forget to buy them. R.I.P Madeleine.
I've only seen a few German movies, mostly thanks to my German and film classes.
-The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari
-Gegen die Wand (Head On)
-The Comedian Harmonists
I really enjoyed them all, and will eventually get around to buying them.
LaMonica, have you read the others by Michael Norman and Beth Scott? Haunted America and Historic Haunted America. There were quite a few in there that gave me the willies. There's one in America that rivals the Amityville Horror and I still shudder thinking about it.
Myself, never having been through one, love tornadoes and hurricanes. I was at one point studying to be a meteorologist, and I find them fascinating. I would actually love to see one / both at least once in my life.
I've read the book as well. King is very hit and miss with me, and this was a huge miss. It's been awhile since I read it, so I don't remember particulars, but it didn't grip me like other works of King have. I really didn't care about the characters, or the car, or what happened to anyone...
I tend to re-read if there aren't any books on my shelves that I haven't read it. I love revisiting worlds and characters and reading them over and over again. Except for Harry Potter books, I haven't re-read a book in quite some time. I feel guilty doing that when there are other books on my...
