    anyone in to asian films?

I've watched a lot Zhang Yimou films, particularly his older ones. I would watch any film with Gong Li in it, she's a wonderful actress. A lot of Yimou's older films have her as the starring role. If I had to recommend some really good Asian films.... Watch.. Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang...

Do you judge a book by its cover?

I don't really know if I have a FAVORITE book cover, but I tend to like those that have historical artwork on it. I particularly like the cover for "The Crimson Petal and the White". I generally dislike any cover with any kind of photograph on it.

How do you arrange your bookshelves?

Another thread has got me thinking. The types of books we own reveal a lot about ourselves; aspects of our personalities can be gleaned from what kind of books we collect and what kind of condition our books are in. I also think how we organize our bookshelves reveal a bit about ourselves. How...

    Books you've grown out of

I've grown out of the Redwall series. I used to love them when I was younger, but I can't get back into them. By the time I had read "The Legend of Luke" the magic was gone. I suppose the plot got repetitive and the characters vapid. It was a sad sad moment.....loved those furry little...

What's wrong with the public library?

I would have to agree. The environment in a library is not nearly as warm and welcoming as a bookstore. For me, it's not the coffee but the asthetics....a book store is visually stimulating. You see books propped up on stands, displayed and organized in an appealing manner. Books stacked in a...

Why do we like collecting books?

Like everyone else has stated, I love the feeling of owning books and being able to pick them off the shelf at my own leisure. However, my compulsive urge to keep buying books is in constant battle with my urge to keep everything organized. (What is the opposite of a pack rat?) As a result...

Need to find the name of a children's fantasy book!

Alright, I only know the basic outline of the plot of this book. I read it several years ago as a child. This is what I can recall from it. Basically the premise is that a young girl finds some sort of rabbit hole (not alice in wonderland!) and goes through. When she comes out, she finds...

How long before you give up on a book??

Hmm...I usually can't stand to give up on a book, (though I've given up on a few  ) but when I buy the book I feel compelled to read it no matter how much I hate it. However, if it's bad and from the library, it's fair game to throw it out the window! :D

Fiction involving animals (and deffo not in a rude way!)

The Redwall series get's tiring though. I used to read it when I was younger and I was a huge fan. When I tried to pick up the books again a few years later it wasn't the same. The plots are all basically the same and the characters are pretty flat. If you read the FAQ section on his website he...

    Robin McKinley

Is there any Robin McKinley book you'd recommend in particular? I've never read her but I'm interested in trying her out. :)

    Michel Faber

The book was really good, but I agree that the ending was a bit of a rip off.

Fiction involving animals (and deffo not in a rude way!)

He also wrote Tales from Watership Down, which was basically a continuation of the story.

    historical fiction recommendations

I'd recommend either "The Other Bolyen Girl" or "The Queen's Fool" as well. Philippa Gregory is a really good historical fiction writer. She came out with her latest book, "The Virgin's Lover" recently, though it's not out on paperback yet. If you're going to read her, start with "The Other...
