Try Pirates! by Celia Reese. It's about a girl who gets into a cruel arranged marriage, and how she escapes it by becoming a pirate. It's an adventurous story.

All 3, my kids read the children's version of biographies.
I took a peek at some of these, and Edison's had some interesting facts.
Then Curie, who discovered radium. Ultimately died from cancer/leukemia, from being irradiated with radioactive...
Reading sure beats just watching TV. Especially all that MTV I watched back when I was a teenager. In hindsight, watching MTV seems so much wasted time.

For children's horror, I can recommend John Bellairs.
He wrote House With a Clock in Its Walls, Ghost in the Mirror, The Figure in the Shadows. All 3 I read and really enjoyed. He also wrote Johnny Dixon series. They're also children's horror.
You could also try Coraline and The Graveyard...
As these indie publishers come along and sell their e-books for 99 cents, the list of best selling authors are going to slowly change. And existing, larger publishing companies will have to consider changing their strategy.
