The three volumes of LOTR in the same month? It's going to be a very busy month :(
Maybe we could have a poll to see if people are willing to read the 3 in the same month?
Thanks a lot, Prolixic and Lies. I've got a much better idea now. :) I personally have no objection in reading all of them in the next months...
I'm almost completely ignorant about fantasy (though I would have read The Dark Tower anyway since I've read almost everything else King has...
I've never heard about "the Silmarillion", how does it fit in the LOTR series?
After the LOTR series, we could read Stephen King's Dark Tower series, I've been meaning to read them for a while...
That would be real long-term planning ;) I suppose that way everybody would have time to get...
I've never read the Lord of the Rings trilogy (though I saw the 1st movie and liked it) but I was told if I wanted to read it I should read the Hobbit first? Is it better to read the Hobbit first or not necessary? Should the Hobbit be the first of the Tolkien books of the month?
I also try to read every evening but when I'm exhausted I fall asleep after only about ten lines.
I can read from 10 minutes a day to several hours in a row (week-ends and holidays)
Nobody inspired by The Shipping News?
Or maybe I shouldn't have talked specific points before everybody has finished? Since it's my first book of the month discussion here, I'm not very aware of the procedure I'm afraid...
Do we wait till everybody indicates they finished or just go ahead...
The beginning, if I remember correctly, goes like this:
Orr is in trouble because he bought more sleeping pills than his pharmacy card allows him to (everybody is closely monitored). He's very poor, lives in a dingy room. The man who ends up being the concierge of his apartment building is...
I watch a lot of films and TV series and like Darren I am a fan of the X-Files. Unfortunately, in the USA where I currently live, we've already had the series finale, but there are many interesting new series. One of them, "Monk" is my favorite: a private detective who's very sharp but suffers...
It's what makes a discussion interesting, that we don't all like the same books :)
I have 2 questions about the novel, I have my own opinion on both, but I'd like to know what other people think:
SPOILERS AHEAD
1) Quoyle is always Quoyle, I don't think his first name is ever mentioned...
Welcome Alex,
Fortunately there are plenty of people who read for enjoyment , but I agree with you, it is depressing to meet people who admit they hate reading. You probably won't meet any on this site though ;)
I've finished too :)
I wrote a review in the reviews library ...
A little more about Quoyle:
Will probably rent the movie too : I'm curious to see what they made of it...
Marie
Welcome Amy,
We have at least 2 favorite books in common: I love Jane Austen too (though my favorite is Pride and Prejudice) and plan to reread Geisha soon!
:)
Marie
Cover and synopsis and I read a lot of book reviews on the Internet (on amazon.com or smaller sites).
I also take advice from people with similar tastes...
My problem is that I've got too many ideas about what to read and of course not enough time!:)
I've read 26 chapters. In fact I'm looking forward to finish it so I can start another book, which is not a good sign! (and the fact that I haven't finished it is not a good sign either...)
I agree with you Darren, several threads that don't lead anywhere (so far). I was enthusiastic at the...
Reading the thread about bookmarks and folding pages makes me think about something else:
Do you prefer hardcovers or paperbacks ?
I think hardcovers look nicer on shelves but I definitely prefer paperbacks.
The reason? First because they are cheaper, then because I read mainly in bed and...
Confessions of an ex-page folder
Don't worry Dawn, I used to be a page folder too:)
Until once, about 10 years ago, I was staying at a friend's and borrowed one of her mother's books (for my defense, it was an old paperback) and she caught me folding the corner of the page.:o
She...
I think that a nice bookmark adds to the pleasure of reading. But since I'd hate to spend money on a bookmark, I make my own, with scraps of colored and textured paper, autumn leaves, etc.
I was wondering what everybody else use as a bookmark? Do some of you simply fold the corner of the page ?
