What a thing to read while eating lunch! Eeewwww! My question is: How could she not know it was there? Did she think she had a really bad cold? Gross indeed!!

    sneakers dangling from powerlines

In Queens, NY where I grew up, kids would take the sneakers from someone they didn't like and throw them over the wires so that kid would get hell for losing his sneaks. And a few people did it with their own sneakers if they didn't like them, thinking mom would buy a new pair. :) I never...

TBF Top 100 Scifi List Discussion

No problem! Usually I like being invisible anyway! :D And I took your suggestion and posted some more that I forgot about until I went over the lists and my shelves. The ones that sucked I usually forget or block out--have to think hard about that one. :)

    Do you read non-fiction?

Being a big fan of classic films, I like to read biographies on movie stars of the past, and books about the films and the studios/directors that made them. Also books on musicians and bands that I like, gardening books, books about cats, & some history. :)

Wolves of the Calla 18CC HB BIN

There is a set of Dark Tower books that has many beautiful color illustrations throuhout the books. I would guess that in hardcover they would be more pricey than the non-illustrated version, so maybe what you found online was one of them. Don't know what those #'s & letters mean-I think HB...

TBF Top 100 Scifi List Discussion

Awesome list! Thanks for putting all that work in! It's a great reference point for finding more cool stuff to read. I was confused about the Top Voters list; I think I posted around 21 votes but didnt see my name, but there are others listed with lower # of votes. Just curious, I'm probably...

    How well read are you?

Must be in the thousands. When I was a kid, and before I had kids,I read constantly. When the kids were small, I spent several years in childrens' literature; which was lots of fun. Dont know if I'm "well read" though. Maybe after I get through all my to-be-read books (Like that will ever...

A cookbook you couldn't put down?

I have a great set of hardcover cookbooks - "The Southern Heritage Cookbook" from Southern Living. Every volume is full of photos and stories from the 1700's-early 1900's related to cooking and eating, celebrations and harvests. Every time I go for a recipe, I end up reading the stories and...

Book Crossing - Recycling books 'into the wild'

I agree. I keep almost every book I buy unless I dont really enjoy it, then I usually donate it to a tiny library we have here. But its certainly better to give away a book than to throw it in the trash. I've found several books abandoned like that, including a 4Vols. of a hardcover set of Poe's...

    Bargains

Yard sales and library sales are my main sources of books. So far this year I've picked up these: Used: Harlow, An Intimate Biography, Yowl-Selected Poems about Cats, 13 French Science Fiction Stories, Murder at the ABA(Asimov), Eyes of the Dragon(S.King), Historic Haunted America, Frenzy(A...

Horror - where do i start?!

If you want to start off with short stories from King, I'd recommend 'Night Shift' and the Barker's that Stewart suggested. Barker is a lot gorier than King, so it depends on what you like. I like both. If you want to try something classic I suggest Dracula by Bram Stoker. Hope you find...

    So, then my boss said...

This is from a Dilbert cartoon from last year. Its a conversation between an employee and the pointy-haired boss. Hope it brings a smile to you: :) Employee: I need a day off to attend my twin sister's funeral. Boss: A WHOLE day?? How well did you know her? Emp...

Was that "How to Win Friends and Influence People? Great book. I think everyone should read it. Congratulations :D to Hollis on the baby. Thats a happy thought indeed! My youngest is 14 and I still remember hearing him in there for the first time. :D What makes me happy is that winter is...

    Suspense/Thriller novels written by women?

I was wondering about maybe Agatha Christie. 'The Clocks' was my favorite. :)

    How many times.......

I hardly ever re-read. The only ones I have read again are 'The Shining' (King), 'The Great and Secret Show' (Barker), 'The Hobbit'(Tolkein) and 'Something Wicked This Way Comes' (Bradbury) which I am just about to finish. There are a few others I may re-read someday if I ever get through my 143...

    Five Best Horror Novels

My list is a mix of classic and modern horror. I dont think one type is better than the other, just different. We owe much gratitude to the early adventurers into this genre, they certainly paved the way. :) 1 Frankenstein - Mary W. Shelley 2 Dracula - Bram Stoker 3 Needful Things -...

    Any Clive Barker fans?

Thanks for pointing that out. I didnt realize they were the same because I borrowed it under the title of 'The Inhuman Condition' from the library and I just recently got 'Books of Blood' Vols. 1&2 at a library sale and didn't realize that Volume 1 is the same book. Any idea why the title...

    Agatha Christie

I started reading Agatha Christie when I was 12 and the Nancy Drew series was no longer challenging. I cant remember all the ones I read, but 'The Clocks' was my favorite, followed by 'Death on the Nile' & 'Ten Little Indians'. I picked these up at a recent library sale. Has anyone read them...

    The tolerance

I try to be tolerant and openminded also, but I don't think society as a whole is tolerant of others' opinions, practices or behavior, and if I explain why, this thread will be shut down, which kind of proves my point, so I will say no more on that. What country is the most tolerant? I'd have...
