I researched the alerts a bit more and they are deleted after 4 days. Sorry for the misinformation.

What's new when you are logged out is a list of recent posts. When you are logged in, it keeps track of what you have and haven't seen already and only shows you what is new to your account.

Alerts never disappear as far as I know. Conversations are only completely deleted if everyone leaves the conversation. This is because conversations are basically like personal threads where you can only post with invited people. The points are default and I haven't looked into them...
