Hey everyone,
I had my eye on a couple of authors and was just wondering what everyone's opinions were. I've heard rave reviews of the Gormenghast books by Peake and I'm also very curious about the The Book Of The New Sun by Wolfe as well as the Wizard Knight series. Any comments are...
I checked and Armor is actually available now on Amazon. It looks like you can get it new or used. I would say it's definitely a good summer read! So far I'm really enjoying Tigana. Unlike many fantasy authors who drag their stories out far too long, Kay has managed to create a very detailed...
If you ever get the chance to read it again, I would highly recommend it! The first story was actually one of my favorites, but they were all very good.
Samwise Gamgee – Lord Of The Rings
Samuel Hamilton – East Of Eden
Atticus Finch – To Kill A Mockinbird
Gus – Lonesome Dove
Elizabeth Bennett – Pride And Prejudice
From what you said, I would say you would probably like Armor. It's about a group of soldiers who wear bioarmor and are dropped onto a planet to eradicate giant bugs! Definitely not high literature but full of action and definitely a fun read!
I've also had my eye on The Crimson Petal And The White. Are you enjoying that one so far? I've read the first chapter or so and it seemed very well written. Another book I recently read and really enjoyed was Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel. Have you read it? It is paced fairly slow but it...
Thanks for all the suggestions! I always like to have a long line of possibilities ahead of me and those sounded very intriguing! Have you ever read anything by Gene Wolfe or Mervyn Peake? I haven't but have read great reviews of both.
I have the first Tad Williams in my giant "books to read" pile and I'll definitely look into Dragon Bane. Thanks! I'll look forward to some more suggestions. Have you read His Dark Materials by Pullman or Weaveworld by Clive Barker? Like you said, different than your usual fantasy but both...
I haven't read that one either but it's very nice to have a promising fantasy author who's actually completed a few series! Get tired of waiting all the time you know? (GRRM, Jordan, etc...) I've also been thinking I'll try Robyn Hobb soon. Any other suggestions?
Although I can see what some of you mean about the book being a bit slow, I thought it was a very nice change. She was so good at creating a melancholy, magical mood and building up the world. Reminded me so much of Dickens, which is never a bad thing!
I read this book last summer and loved it! She has such a rich, literary style that is a pleasure to read. Have any of you read her other book, "Interpreter Of Maladies"? It's a collection of short stories that won the Pulitzer a few years back. Also very good!
