    Paulo Coelho

I've read a few of his Coelho's novels, including The Alchemist and The Pilgrimage. They were both quite enjoyable, but I would never insist that anyone really read them. Perhaps except The Pilgrimage in case you are interested in actually taking that trip in Spain. I generally think he's...

    Ernest Hemingway

I think Hemingway was also quite an excellent short story writer. I remember having read Old Man at the Bridge once and thinking about it for days.

    How well read are you?

For my age I suppose I am quite well read, but nowhere near as much as well read as I wish I was. Both my father and my grandfather are hugely well read, so it's an important influence and inspiration.

Do you make yourself finish a bad book?

My father always tells me, "life is too short to read books that don't interest you". A good piece of advice, I think.

    Greatest Americans

Henry Ford? On what grounds? I think the U.S. has had far better presidents in the 20th century than him. Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton. I'd most likely include Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King in my top 5. Also Mark Twain, George Washington, of course...

The Most overrated fiction book ever?

The most overrated book ever is Catcher in the Rye. It was such a dissapoint to read it. Otherwise I'd mention the Da Vinci Code.

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher In The Rye

I dislike Catcher in the Rye, and I've never understood all the fuss about it. I think its a mediocre novel filled with clichés and a boring narrator.

Suggestions: September book of the month

The complete collection of fairytales and stories by Hans Christian Andersen, since it was his 200th birthday a few months ago.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

My favorite authors change the more I read, but right now the list would look as follows (in no particular order). Albert Camus, Henrik Pontoppidan, John Steinbeck, Ian McEwan, James Joyce, Fyodor Dostoevskiy, Thomas Mann, Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Jorge Luis Borges...

    Ian McEwan

Ian McEwan is without the slightest doubt one of the finest, most interesting and psychologically haunting novelists alive today. I've enjoyed many of his books, in particular Saturday and Atonement, his two best, and also Enduring Love and Amsterdam. What makes McEwan so brilliant is his...
