I've got 3 packages on there way, 2 from amazon and one from FSF book club. Going to be beans on toast for every meal for the next month :(
Earlier this week received:
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldrich, by P K Dick
The Sheep Look Up, by John Brunner
Grendel by John Gardner (this one...
I'm currently half way through Northern Lights, by Phil Pullman. Its good so far - although aimed at a younger audience compared to books i would normally read. It's nice to be able to finish a book in just 2 or 3 sittings, reminds me of being a kid, when i could read all day long.
Good...
Finished 'We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin' recentely. Was on my TBR list for ages, and i kept hearing it was brilliant.
I found it to be marginaly better than average, but nothing special. I would stick to books it 'inspired' like 1984 and Brave New World.
btw, Does anyone know if the lead...
Drowned world: i can see why you would find it boring. Not much happening yet. Thats why i couldn't think of much to write in my description.
Guess it was original when it came out (if you don't count Noah's Ark - which seems much more interesting at the mo'). A lot of Ballard's stuff is...
Here's 5 that i don't think have been mentioned:
Canticle for Leibowitz, by Walter Miller - about the Churches attempt to preserve knowledge afer the 'Flame deluge'.
Riddley Walker, by Russel Hoban - a brilliant book set a long time after apocalypse, people living in a stonge age society...
If by clever, you mean intelectual i would recomend;
Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg (unless you are middle aged / balding, then it might be a bit too depressing).
The Dispossed, We, Brave New world, 1984 are all great distopian novels.
If you like them especially i found Stand on...
For the record, i think the Book of the New Sun was truly great.
But Shadow of the Torturer can't really be understood until you have read the whole series - some things in it just make no sense the first time through.
Definately worth the effort tho, Wofe's writing is simply brilliant.
As...
If your not looking for epics or trilogies:
Little,Big by John Crowley doesnt' have much (any?) violence that i remember and is very hightly regarded by critics (and me  ).
Yobmod X
Hi all,
I agree with the recomendations for Forever War and The Stars my Destination - both brilliant.
In terms of originality i would suggest Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner. I've still never read anything like it. But the writing is ( i guess you could say) avant garde - so maybe not...
Hello Everybody, i'm new here. None of my freinds seem to read  so i have to find somewhere online i can discuss cool books.
Here's my (fantasy authors) top 5:
1) Patricia Mckillip (Forgotten Beast of Eld, Ombria in Shodow, Riddlemaster Trilogy - all beautifully written, and...
