What are your top books of 2008?

In order read: The Boy Detective Fails - Joe Moen The Secret History - Donna Tartt Behind the Moon - Hsu-Ming Teo Hmm, seems 2008 wasn't a big fiction year for me. The fiction to non-fiction ratio will be more balanced in 2009 I predict.

    The demise of Borders bookstore

I've never heard of Raffin. As much as I dislike my hometown and think of it as a glaring beacon of everything that is wrong in Canada right now, I have to say it's indie & used book stores were plentiful and impeccably stocked. Fair's Fair was the best, with two locations, and I believe...

Uh, it would have had to have been in English. I grew up in Calgary, not much French goin' on there. And, alas, have yet to learn, but my work place is proving to be an immersion program. :)

The Trois couleurs series are the only works I have seen from him so far. Bleu basically catapulted Juliette Binoche's career. But those films are really his dénouement. I thought the idea of him working with, or more accurately through, young filmmakers, Europe's new cinema "royalty", was a...

    Charles Bukowski

I only know of Charles Bukowski through many recommendations from a friend over the years AND a Modest Mouse song... After reading this thread I think I have a better idea of where to start.

    Storyteller vs Writer...

This may seem like I'm simplifying things but I think there's a test to tell the distinction. If you come away wanting to tell someone the plot line of a book it's storytelling. On the other hand if you come away wanting to quote sentences or passages it's the work of a writer. With...

Voting-March 2009 Book of the Month

Oh, Charles de Lint. My vote goes to the book by an author from my adoptive city! :) Quills and Quire said that he is "one of Canada's best-kept literary secrets". Well, could this be my time to discover him? Oh, AND he's a folk musician. Thanks B&R I learn something new every time I login.

Oh, I just adore Cate Blanchett. I recommend you get your hands on a copy of the movie Heaven by Tom Tykwer (of Run Lola Run fame). It's easily the most beautiful movie ever. :) If you have a moment read this overview of the film and the it's connection to Krzysztof Kieślowski Heaven

    Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar

I'm a fan of Plath's poetry and have read the Bell Jar twice. While I like the Bell Jar, and it certainly appealed to me when I was in High School, I'm foremost a fan of the poetry. I have a knack for finding books on the street, and last summer found a Plath biography by Edward Butscher at a...

Fought over any good books lately?

Oh, and I wanted to mention about the online vs. in-person sit down groups... In college during the summers I did the overnights at my old job. Riding the bus home at 7am I would often witness a book club happening right there on the bus. A group of women who work for the Federal government...

Fought over any good books lately?

The first thing I noticed about the article was the illustration. I was rather...offended? No, put-off that is was all women. That said, I was glad the article addressed the issue of all male and co-ed groups.
