    Kurt Vonnegut: Slaughterhouse-Five

I will have to try this with my cats. I have one vain kitty who loves to look at herself in the mirror, and the others are very curious about their reflections. They often stand in front of the mirror and touch it with their paws. I'll experiment with it this evening and see what happens.

What can we learn from death?

Death has been haunting me lately, with friends and their family members passing away. The visitation I attended today really struck a chord within me as the man who died was the definition of "heart of gold". As I drove home through a thunderstorm, I pondered "Will I learn anything from...

    Ice Cream: What's your favorite?

Since I'm vegan, I don't eat traditional ice cream (the dairy variety). My favorite frozen ice cream-like deserts are hazelnut soy yogurt and sorbet. (I had a fantastic apple flavored sorbet the other day...mmmm!) And waffle cones...yum.

    I just finished reading...

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. I will be resurrecting the thread dedicated to him in the Authors forum.

    Artemis Fowl

I don't normally pick up YA fiction, not even Harry Potter... However, Rogue's description of "Die Hard with elves" piqued my curiousity. I've nearly finished the first one in one sitting and believe that this may be the perfect recommendation for my 14 yr old nephew who vehemently claims...

Books with photos of the author

Understood, Novella. I was just responding to those who had said that they are put off by author photos printed on books. Perhaps I misread that as meaning that they wouldn't read the book. This may sound ignorant, but do you know of a study that shows that readers select certain books due...

How many have actually seen a bookworm?

Oh crap - I don't need any more stuffed animals, but those are really cool! Thanks for the link.

Erik Larson: The Devil in the White City

Does anyone have any recommendations for a non-fiction book that runs two parallel, intertwining stories, such as this one? I really appreciated getting "2 for 1" with this book and would love finding another one similar, as long as the topic isn't something completely irrelevant. i.e. "Mating...

Books with photos of the author

It doesn't bother me at all. I don't purchase books based on the writer's appearance. I'm more concerned with content.

Pamela Anderson & her KFC boycott

You'd be surprised about what people don't know. I've done volunteer work for a local animal rights organization, and any exposure to the cruel treatment of animals can make someone think twice before eating meat again, kfc or otherwise. Pam gets kudos from me for actually voicing her...

    Computer or Reading?

I hate that I lose reading time while driving, so I do what any good and safe driver does... I keep books and magazines in the car and read when I'm stuck in traffic or at long stop lights. Obviously, it can't be something that I really need to focus on. Usually, I stick to short articles...

    Who likes Star Wars?

Hey, I'm not a Star Wars geek... just cause I have a stuffed artoo hanging from my rearview mirror, and another one in my kitchen windowsill, and a slew of the legos and figures sitting on a shelf in my living room... and I know the soundtrack to ep2 by heart... err....argument is failing...

    Is this a crime?

In 2004, there was a college student in Wisconsin who faked her own kidnapping. She was charged, given 3 years probation, and required to pay back the $9,000 price tag that accompanied her search. If this is the current precedent, Wilbanks should face the same charges. She utilized...

    Who likes Star Wars?

A few of my friends hate Star Wars too, and one has never even seen it. So, you aren't alone. :)

    Who likes Star Wars?

I'm in the minority here. I saw Star Wars for the first time last year and purposefully read Cloak of Deception after seeing ep1 (before watching ep2). I think that made the prequels better for me. Episode 2 is my favorite... (ducks) I'm surprised I haven't worn out the dvd yet, due to how...

    Computer or Reading?

Hands down, I spend more time on the computer. It provides all my news, all my mail, and a lot of my other daily reading. (It replaces the television.) Plus, I spend all day working on it in the office. I usually read the most on weekends and before I go to bed at night.

Another, is it time to legalize thread...

Here is an in-depth article on why prostitution should be legal... Just like Moto said, the fact that it is illegal doesn't stop anyone from doing it. I wonder how legalization would affect insurance rates (in the US).
