It's a coupe of years now since I read 'The Wind-up Bird Cronicle', and given my terrible memory I'm left more with my overall impressions of the book, without the ability to recall it's every detail. But I'd certainly agree with this:
A word oft tossed in the direction of Murokami's work is...
Shade: Of the Russians I mentioned, Voinovich wrote about the communist system he lived under, whereas Pelevin and Kurkov are concerned with the kind of ‘anything goes if you’ve got enough money’ hyper-capitalism that sprung up in urban areas of the former USSR following the collapse of...
I don't have as much time to answer as I'd like as I'm off to the wintery climes of Sergograd again, but whilst I'm here:
Blot on the Landscape
in a similar vein 'The Ascent of Rum Doodle'
a modern day take on Gullivers travels, 'The Roaches have no King'
There are some good...
Well, as has been pointed out, this may be a little ‘Groundhog Day’ but with the notable exception of the various Nabakov discussions, this is the most interesting and lively thread we’ve had on TBF for some time. Some good points have been made, some of which I think deserve repeating, and I’ll...
If someone uses a 'stream of consciousness' style they’ve got to be a very good writer and tackling subjects that are of interest for me to be persuaded to read on…
StillILearn: I meant that the post "I am curious" was rather enigmatic...
Well indeed, we voted 30-5 in favour of a "Hall of Shame" only for the mods to overrule...
Well, that kind of goes back to mods/Darren just keeping people informed about what's going on...
I'd guess it may have been his continued attempts to stop the new 'four word story' thread by posting "something something THE END". I noticed he did it a few times (with each post being subsequently deleted by a mod).
My question is sort of linked:
Would the mods care to tell us the real identity of the recently banned slaughterhigh? My initial thought when he started posting here a few days ago was "Oh hello, bobbyburns is back" although I also considered it might be the "Oh No Origami" guy or whatever his...
Ok, that's good.
btw - going back to Top Gear they had a winter olympics special that is worth watching, here are a couple of clips:

Not quite a motorbike video but you guys might like it anyway:

From the Top Gear Winter Olympics special; fun with ski jumps. First they stick ski's on a mini, fit rockets to the back and fire it off the jump, then they get their test driver 'Stig' to...
A comment which probably says more about your lack of imagination than the vastness of my knowledge...
Not the Russian TV version no, it would be hard for me to follow without the subtitles anyway.
Ouch! that's got to hurt...
You do like a good old surf don't you Sitaram!
I wonder if the Big Read mentioned here is the BBC Big Read?
Anyway, drifting off topic for a second, this comment:
"Opening an O'Brian novel in this series satisfies like settling down in one's seat as the curtain goes up on the York Theatre...
Interesting link Sitaram, thanks for that. I'd never thought about this aspect of emails before, despite having archived correspondence with some of my own friends as a kind of electronic diary.
It also reminds me that there are a few collections of author correspondence that I've been...
That was probably the tall one who front's the show (Jeremy Clarkson) because he owns a lighthouse there, I have no idea why.
The Isle of Mann's on odd place, most famous for it's motorbike racing:

Although I won't speed there at normal times as...
An interesting article giving Dan Fante's views on his father's work and the new film of "Ask The Dust".
http://www.laurahird.com/newreview/askthedustinterview.html
Also contains links to other interviews...
It's a good movie but, for my money, ultimately comes across as a rather superficial take on the film it was based on - ‘Blind Chance’ by Krzysztof Kieslowski. Now that’s a Top 5 film.
