    Euro 2004

So, Sweden and Denmark got the 2-2 draw they needed. I didn't see the game and can't believe such a result could be fixed, but questions will be asked (especially in Italy  Arrivederci l'Italia!)

    Amusing test :)

Time for bed, it's work on the morrow. Now where on earth did Rover leave that dog chew?..........

I don't ask for much .. (pic heavy)

I've a lot of biker friends so I can understand the attraction, but I've seen many of them hurt too. I suppose that it's the danger element which is a large part of the attraction but I can't help thinking that your just too exposed on a bike. You're right though, it's an admirable piece of...

It's cool to watch such bikes in the hands of, say, Valentino Rossi, but British roads are just way too dangerous for them. Stick to the track.

    Euro 2004

For me it's a sad state of affairs when all the money (and, therefore the top players) in football is concentrated in the hands of a few clubs, and it's set to get worse - if you can't compete in the Champions League you lose players and money to those who can and a vicious spiral begins...

Well it's a step in the right direction! :D

Yea, he's a great player already, but as an Evertonian I'm in two minds; it's great to see him do well for England :) but it probably means that he won't be playing here for much longer

You lot should get off your backsides and stop killing us and the planet  Get a bike - it's good for your heart and your soul :) http://www.nationalcyclingstrategy.org.uk/index.html ;) Having said that, I wouldn't mind one of these...

    Oldest book you own?

I've got a First Edition of Marie Corelli's "The Sorrows of Satan" from 1895. I've others that are a little older but as a lover of novels I especially like this one for it's historic interest; it's renowned as probably the first "bestseller", and was a huge influence on novel writing in the...

    Ask Me Anything ...

:o Double arg! No, I didn't know that. I'll consider this an abject lesson on why one should never flippantly submit posts without doing some research first. Apologies all round :o Worse still, how will I ever be able to impress anyone with that pointless fact? I can picture myself standing...

    The pointless fact thread!

yea, I can just see him being dragged around a field as he tries to pick it up by the tail - "Strewth, this is a big 'un!" :)

    Ask Me Anything ...

 Why does a duck's quack have no echo? ;)

    The pointless fact thread!

Not me, but a horse's bite is more powerful than that of a crocodile. Apparently ;)

What's the best opening line of a book (fiction or non)?

How about this for an opening line? "It was the afternoon of my 81st birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me." (From "Earthly Powers" by Anthony Burgess)

Who is your favourite author, and why?

However hard I think about this I can't come up with one particular favourite, but the following do seem to be predominant on my bookshelves: Charles Dickens Joseph Heller Salman Rushdie John Steinbeck Jack kerouac Angela Carter Aldous Huxley Primo Levi Peter Ackroyd Eric Hobsbawm

    Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Freya, I think "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield fits all of your criteria - it's superb historical fiction that's swashbuckling (for want of a better word) but also full of rich historical detail and intrigue.

Any really, really, really long books that you would recommend?

If you want really, really, really long try "In Search of Lost Time" by Marcel Proust. It's in excess of 3000 pages.
  19. ControlArmsNow

the book you cannot drop after you start the fist page?

Primo Levi prefaces "If This is a Man" with this; "You who live safe in your warm houses, you who find , returning in the evening, hot food and friendly faces: Consider if this is a man who works in the mud, who does not know peace, who fights for a scrap of bread, who dies because of a yes...

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Have just taken advantage of my local bookshop's 3 for 2 offer. Wait, on seconds thoughts my local bookshop has just taken advantage of me; I only wanted one book but decided I might as well pay for a second in order to get the third free. I hate marketeers! Anyway, here's the books...
