So, Sweden and Denmark got the 2-2 draw they needed. I didn't see the game and can't believe such a result could be fixed, but questions will be asked (especially in Italy  Arrivederci l'Italia!)
I've a lot of biker friends so I can understand the attraction, but I've seen many of them hurt too. I suppose that it's the danger element which is a large part of the attraction but I can't help thinking that your just too exposed on a bike. You're right though, it's an admirable piece of...
For me it's a sad state of affairs when all the money (and, therefore the top players) in football is concentrated in the hands of a few clubs, and it's set to get worse - if you can't compete in the Champions League you lose players and money to those who can and a vicious spiral begins...
Yea, he's a great player already, but as an Evertonian I'm in two minds; it's great to see him do well for England :) but it probably means that he won't be playing here for much longer

Worse still, how will I ever be able to impress anyone with that pointless fact? I can picture myself standing...
How about this for an opening line?
"It was the afternoon of my 81st birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me."
(From "Earthly Powers" by Anthony Burgess)
However hard I think about this I can't come up with one particular favourite, but the following do seem to be predominant on my bookshelves:
Charles Dickens
Joseph Heller
Salman Rushdie
John Steinbeck
Jack kerouac
Angela Carter
Aldous Huxley
Primo Levi
Peter Ackroyd
Eric Hobsbawm
Hi Freya, I think "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield fits all of your criteria - it's superb historical fiction that's swashbuckling (for want of a better word) but also full of rich historical detail and intrigue.
Primo Levi prefaces "If This is a Man" with this;
"You who live safe in your warm houses, you who find , returning in the evening, hot food and friendly faces: Consider if this is a man who works in the mud, who does not know peace, who fights for a scrap of bread, who dies because of a yes...
Have just taken advantage of my local bookshop's 3 for 2 offer. Wait, on seconds thoughts my local bookshop has just taken advantage of me; I only wanted one book but decided I might as well pay for a second in order to get the third free. I hate marketeers!
Anyway, here's the books...
