Then, you probably would not enjoy one of my favorite books of ALL TIME:
Godel, Escher, Bach - Douglas Hofstadter
The reason I bring this book up here, is that Hofstadter goes into some pretty strange linguistic oddities, as we are discussing, and you really need to work to understand his...
Reminds me of THIS one (it really can be done):
Punctuate the following so it makes sense:
Albert while Mary had had had had had had had had had had had the teacher's preference.
I don't get the dog one, by the way.
I have no problem with the pink license plates - but I have a better idea. I actually heard politicians discussing this, but I thought of this years ago.
Once you have a DWI conviction, there's a breathalyzer installed in the dashboard. You blow into it - if your blood alcohol level is above...
Hello Felipe
I don't speak Italian - so I can't say which is the BEST translation. I will tell you, that NONE of the proposals really sound like fluent English - at least, to an American. They are all clearly translations. The language is too heavy - too descriptive. It needs to be stripped...
Often, when faced with a monumental choice, we know right away what we want to do. The head/heart controversy, the positive/negative evaluation, the looking at it from all angles - these are all ways we undermine our true desire and judgement. Although we know right off what we want to do, we...
I heard this piece a week ago - and it's haunted me ever since.
I ordered the music, and recorded this last night.

After the demanding pieces that I've been playing for years, for all their beauty, this "simple" piece is a breath of fresh...
Here's an amazing brain teaser I heard some years back. I occupied my mind for a few days, before I gave up. I had a few solutions, but they didn't work anywhere as well as the real answer.
I thought it was compelling enough to write it up and post it on my site. Give it a try. There is a...
And then when you do decide to complain to them, it's harder to find a phone number or even a customer service email link from their site, then to find Bin Ladin. One time when I renewed my subscription, it did not update my license, and I had to spend days going to their site to finally find a...
I died twice, and that's all I'm going to take! I can only die so much and I've had it!
But, I can explain the attraction. See, many of us a a little bit bored. Here you have a virtual experience, that is rather terrfying when you think about it - if it were for real. But it is NOT real, so...
I recognize the need for virus protection software, firewalls, and the like. I just wish those programs would just work in the background, and leave me alone to do my work. They are like bratty children, always demanding my attention - sometimes competing with EACH OTHER for my attention...
Morty - when you walk into a room, point your finger at the people having a nice conversation, and cluck your tongue and say "shame on you", don't expect your comments to be well received.
So far, everyone has based their comments of Bellow on their own reading, NOT on the opinions of others...
The first book that completely enthralled me, was the original Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I was 9 or 10. I could not put the book down for a whole weekend. It was then I thought, "There might be something in this reading thing after all".
OK, forget what anybody else might say about Bellow. This book (Humbolt's Gift) is terminally boring. I managed to endure 30 excruciating pages on the bus, with minimal brain atrophe so far, but I'm kind of hesitant to push my luck. I had to put the thing down berfore I turned into a total...
The Jungle - Upton Sinclaire
This is about as subtle as a sledgehammer in the face - and as devestating.
also;
Bound For Glory - Woody Guthrie
A bit more subtle.
I can tell you both these books will hold you spellbound, while they are making the social/political commentary you are seeking.
Oh, excuse me for asking people what they think about Bellow. I started a book of his, am finding it pretty dry, so I asked what other people thought. I had this delusion that the purpose of a forum was to exchange ideas and opinions - and this particular thread is about Saul Bellow. Stewart...
Well, I read some of the thread. Groan... Does anybody like this author - other than the guy that recommended him to me, and Bellow himself?
That's what I get for asking for a recommendation from someone that only reads "real" books. I mean, this thing is so stuffy and high brow, I bet there...
Just started Humbolt's Gift. Anybody read this? I need some encouragement. It was recommended by someone who's opinion I regard highly, but coming off The Night of the Triffids, this seems pretty dry and uneventful. Somebody, please. Now that he recommeded it to me (I called him by cell...
Excellent! Superb! I grant you, this sequel to the enormously popular Day of the Triffids will not garner a Noble Prize, or find itself on required reading lists in universities. Who gives a rodent's posterior? I enjoyed The Day of the Triffids - by John Wyndham, immensely. Even more now...
