The classic example is Clark Gable as Rhett Butler.
I believe the book was actually written with him in mind.
For the most part, if you get the feeling that an actor was born to play a role, it's a tribute to the actor.
I recently saw The Devil Wears Prada, and Meryl Streep could not have...
Today I did 30 min on the recumbant bike.
Longest time ever. I'm better with weights than with cardio exercises - my endurance is for sh*t. But, I can do a bit longer all the time. The recumbant bike is easier for me than the treadmill, which is easier than the cross trainer, which is easier...
Last night watched Fight Club.
I'm still reeling from the experience.
WOW!
What balls. What originality. I'm totally stunned.
This has to be one of the most memorable films I've ever seen. I know it's been said before - which is why I went out and rented it - and I was NOT disappointed...
I took a look a look at this wiki thing.
Utterly shameful.
Not only do they boast about how successful at stealing they are, not only do they tell everyone else how to imitate their stealing, they also justify their horrendous behavior with rationalizations about how much restaurants and...
The Lady in the Water
Just got back from the theater.
I can't give it more than a 5 out of 10. Paul Paul Giamatti was ok (despite his character suffering from a needless and annoying stutter) but the story on the whole was uninvolving, the monster not very scary, and the other characters...
The Sound of Nothing
(a little nothing, about nothing, by Libre)
The clap of one hand, still makes a small sound,
Try and you'll hear the air whirling around.
A grasshopper fart is quietly passed,
Yet the little gnats laugh, at the thunderous blast.
An owl in search of its unwary...
Yes, I did see a vascular surgeon. He's the one that diagnosed the claudication. He said that the procedure would likely be a balloon angioplasty (if I'm remembering correctly).
I don't want no balloon angioplasty.
Wait, a double negative - I'll fix it.
I don't want no balloon angioplasy...
The treadmill is boring, that's true. Hard to overcome that.
I used to find that bike riding was much more exciting. Riding, as I used to do it - in NYC traffic - was exciting because there was always a reasonble chance that I would be killed.
The gym has it's own mentality, though. I really...
A bit of life history:
Up through my 30's, I was always very active and athletic. Though I shunned organized sports such as baseball and basketball, I had lots of vigor and agility, and could usually leave my peers in the dust in any kind of race. I could beat much bigger boys in arm...
Memento;
The Pianist;
Kill Bill;
Pulp Fiction;
The Shawshank Redemption;
Goodfellas;
My Cousin Vinnie;
Schindler's List;
Ed Wood;
Bitter Moon
I spent 5 minuts writing this list. If I spent hours, it might change a little. No matter, these were way up there, in my book. Some I only...
I've been giving it some thought, and I want to suggest the ONE GREATEST sci fi movie of all time. Not the best MOVIE, but the best sci fi movie.
This movie has an incredibly compelling plot, unbelievable make-up and sets, great acting, and the BEST line ever uttered on camera.
If I tell you...

I read Sliver.
Thought it was trash - pretty much.
But what does that have to do with Halo's comment about the quality of This Perfect Day?
Are you saying Sliver was so awful they took ALL of Levin's books out of print?
I really don't get what you are saying here - can you be a...
I read it back in the 70's. I recall that I enjoyed it TREMENDOUSLY. I cared about the main characters, and their plight, passionately. If it's out of print, it can only be because Uni must have pulled it off the presses.
Why else would they stop printing such a superb novel?
MC-
My post was unclear. I was not referring to your post.
I was referring to The Painted Bird, by Jerzy Kozinski, which is not really a short story, but a short novel.
While we're at it, Cockpit, by Kozinski is another shocking read. Also, not a short story though.
Cockpit is one of those...
This is NOT a short story. It's a short novel.
But is IS shocking. MUCH more shocking than ANYTHING ELSE mentioned in this thread (IMHO of course).
The Painted Bird - Jerzy Kozinski
6 months after I moved into my condo, at the annual election of managers of the condo association, I ran for a seat on the Board - and won. The term is 3 years. I served that term and ran again, and won a seat again. Now I'm in my second term, and I've been voted the President of the Board of...
The Metamorphosis by Kafka is up there, that's for sure!
The Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge was made into a TV short - I think it was actually a Twilight Zone that was hardly ever aired - but I did see it once.
Not sure if these qualify as "Middle Ages" precisely, but:
Mary Stewart's Merlin and King Arthur books are exceptional.
The Hollow Hills and The Crystal Cave are 2.
