Looking For a Good Love Story

Ah, espionage! Harlot's Ghost is absolutely not to be missed. By Norman Mailer. Nor are the LeCarré cold-war novels. After that you pretty much take your pick, IMO. Good love stories? I am very open to suggestion. :)

    Peder's Pond

Reads to Sleep, It sounds to me like you are probably in a better position to comment on the book than I am, since this is the first book I have read on a subject which is quite far from my ordinary interests. But speaking from memory -- no pun intended :) -- I was surprised at the ultimate...

    Peder's Pond

Why Do I Read? To me, reading is like exploring a large unknown continent. Curiosity is what drives me, and the pleasures of discovering new places and vistas are the rewards. Just like travel. And, just like travel, one can't read all of the literature that has been written, any more than one...

Wondered why it was such a topic of conversation?

So, was it worth it? Because a lot of your enjoyment will depend on your own reaction.

    Coheed and Cambria - Descension

Roxbrough: Still no answer to a simple question that you surely must be able to answer: Does or does not your recommended system come along with the possibility of hearing loss according to the currently established sound level for hearing loss? That can be answered with a simple yes or no...

DAE have unusual taste or trouble relating to popular book culture? DAE like older "gothic" fiction?

Welcome, None of those are especially up my alley, but I am sure you can find people here to help steer you. P.S. Hardy might be a hint to broaden out. There's plenty of good reading out there in oother genres.

    Mr Hill's diary

Welcome, a little belated. :) "West of Eden" sounds good. A good riff on "East of Eden" which I have read -- a totally different kind of cat. We too stop by most places for low-price books, and I think they will still beat kindle prices for some time to come.

    Coheed and Cambria - Descension

Roxbrough: A simple assertion that your recommendation does, or does not, lead to danger of hearing loss would suffice. Makes no difference whether or not we know what we are talking about. And whether or not you know whether or not someone like me knows what you are talking about. And as...

    What is Academic Writing ?

It is definitely not what we do around here. I think the answer to your question is: "academic writing" is writing intended for an "audience of academics," Which we at BAR collectively are not. (All terms are defined in the article.) The article itself seems to be written in academic writing...

    Question

I write only for myself, not publication, so I'm not really a "writer." And I write what I call poetry, even though it is rather free form and not finished "poetry." Best part: I like it when the words come together. Worst part: There is no worst part. I'm retired. No more schedules for me. :D

    Books Nobody Else Reads

DATo, Yes she is -- considered to be one of the finest -- but she still competes for my attention among many others, finest and less than finest. I have read the first chapter or so, up to where Deronda makes his entry with a noble gesture. The book is quite readable and I will get back to it...

    Book Reviews

The idea of being able to group all one's reviews in one place (if I read that correctly up above) sounds somewhat like a previous in-house blog capability that BAR once had. It was swept out by new management, or software, someplace along the line. Just saying. I myself liked it when it was...
