If it's your fist foray go for any general collection usually titled "best of", "greates classics" something like that such as you'll pick up in WH Smiths or onlie. You could try one of the Classic FM ones they seem to cover the most popular tunes.
I think some are naive, others knowingly and proudly support causes but it still doesn't mean they can't write or in the case of other artists create.
What concerned me about the Grass case was that people were suggesting that he be stripped of the prize once the information came to light...
Two of my favourite sci-fi authors are Iain M Banks and Julian May.
For Iain M Banks you could try the State of the Art which is a collection of short stories and for Julian May I'd recommend Intervention
Spotting this thread, and a recent post inhe writing and publishing forum got me to thinking about a book I read years ago. I could remember parts of the plot but managed to remember the protagonist's name Philip D'Aubigny. So I googled it and managed to find:

Of the ones you've listed I've read Birdsong and Anansi Boys and enjoyed both of them. If I had to choose just one it generally it would be Birdsong. This is longish moves around in time and has some interesting central characters. However ifyou're a big sci-fi, fantasy, alternative reality...

"An evening mist salted by the western sea was gathering on the low hills - reed - spattered rises running up from the rocks then back into the gorse- and bracken-covered country - and on to the roads that joined the villages, where lamps and candles flickered behind...
Sorry being dumb - can't remember how to edit posts:confused:
ANyway what I said above was essentially correct with the exception of:
"for males -ovich or evich, for females -ovna or evna,
and other points to note:"

Darth,
I've had a read and am happy to comment. Please take these with a pinch of salt as I have no formal qualifications or history as a critic.
The story jumps forward too quickly for me. I don't feel drawn in and involved. The campfire scene at the start - it's too quick; tell me about...
There seems to be a poularity surge at the moment with Teenage/Childrens horror with people like Darren Shan being heavily promoted. I agree, I think (generally) anything that gets folk reading at that age is a good thing and specifically Fantasy, Sci-fi and horror appeal to younger readers...
Farmer Duck and Percy the Parkeeper Stories (by Nick Butterworth) are the current favorites. (Daugher is nearly 4.).
It's strange, they go through phases. One will be completely ignored only to be picked up and demanded every night for 10 days on end.
I'm ashamed to say that I've been working with a client in London fo about a year who is just round the corner from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and I've never actually managed to get in to see one which I know is pathetic.
Whilst I agree with the posts on the thread regarding the fact that this is a publicity/ marketing stunt but may have some longer term benefits for writers in general I do feel slightly sorry for the author.
If she has genuinely sat down and written a book, even if it is a relatively short...
I've only read a few on your list of 100 - but my tuppence worth:
Jeckyl and Hyde is quite short and very readable
anything by Lovecraft is nice and mind bending
John Garder's Grendel is brilliant ... if you've read the original this really turns it on its head.
Mythago Wood is good - but...
I mainly listen to classical. Particularly anything with rich orchestral textures - Late Beethoven onwards to the romantics. Also film scores like John Williams and Hans Zimmer.
