Do you check TBF at work?

    Ditto :D

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

The year before last was his big year point-wise and he played pretty much every game. You're right though, due to the style that he plays, he is definitely injury prone. Still, when you look at his stats, no matter how few games he's played in a given year he's never scored less than 50 pts...

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

All right, all right. Point taken, but that doesn't mean I have to be happy about it! :) As I've said before, just sit back and enjoy cause there's not another one like him.

    Thomas Hardy

Very sorry to hear that :) I really enjoyed Tess but would never wish her life on anyone. I have several of his other works on my TBR pile but have yet to get to them. Based on Tess I can't wait.

Books you are afraid to post about.

Ha! I read this book about a year ago and you're right, definitely a page-turner and I'll admit that I enjoyed it very much. I didn't really think of it as chick-lit at the time but...

    Book Length

I hate getting bogged down in page after page of poor writing, inane description or various other literary ailments. That said, I'm a sucker for an epic. As Kookamoor mentioned, there's nothing better than stumbling on a 900 page book that still ends too soon.

Books which have frightened you to the extent you've had to stop reading.....

Another vote for IT. The part where Stan Uris' wife finds him in the tub really creeped me out when I first read it.

    Fantasy/War Fictions

You'll be happy to hear that Bruce and his merry men assault their fair share of castles, strategize intelligently :D and fill several of your other criteria. And although I don't recall any magical wizards in rural Virginia of the 1860's there's lots of strategy and troop maneuvering in the...

    Fantasy/War Fictions

Not sure if these are what you're looking for but... Gods & Generals, Killer Angels, Last Full Measure by Michael and Jeffrey Shaara – Excellent historical fiction about American Civil War The Bruce Trilogy by Nigel Tranter – More historical fiction about Robert the Bruce and William...

    Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

    I would say four.

    Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

Mostly from the perspective of the immigrants themselves. Although after thinking about it, I'm not altogether sure that America was the only country travelled to. Very differing reactions to their new homes, everything from completely refusing to adapt at all to whole-hearted acceptance at...

    Khaled Hosseini: The Kite Runner

Stewart, just curious if you've ever read anything by Jhumpa Lahiri? She wrote a series of short stories called Interpreter Of Maladies and a novel, Namesake. She writes about Indian immigrants in America but much of her works deals with the Indian culture and she has some absolutely gorgeous...

Audrey Niffenegger: The Time Traveler's Wife

Thanks for taking the step and posting this, lies. ;) I enjoyed a lot of the time travel stuff and felt she had a pretty original concept but I agree that it kind of bogged down in the middle. Also, at times it seemed that she was trying to make the characters a little too gritty and hip...

    Plot points you can't stomach?

I haven't read her books either, but have heard the same complaints. The reason I mentioned this in the first palce was that I recently finished reading Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. I felt his didactic rants took away from an otherwise interesting novel.

    Plot points you can't stomach?

I get annoyed when an author gets too preachy. It's one thing to work philosophies and world views into the fabric of a story, but when the narrator or a character goes into a long-winded diatribe that take away from the flow of the story it definitely gets on my nerves.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Congrats, ds! I know you've had your eye out for that one for a long time. Is Fionavar next on your list, then? All 3 are sitting on my shelf right now but once I read them I'll be curious to hear what you thought of them.

    Vegitarian help please....

Hey Moto, Here's a recipe for some veggie burgers that my wife and I tried recently. Definitely not short or simple but they are absolutely wonderful. They're from America's Test Kitchen. I'm as carnivorous as they come and to me they taste fairly "meaty". Forgive the length but I would...

Hey Ice Hockey Fans !!!!! Deal?

May the trap rot in hell! :) Jacque Lemair won't know what to do under the new system. It will be interesting to see how/if teams like the Devils and Wild adapt.
