I always try to read the book first before seeing the movie, but I don't mind seeing someone else's vision of it. The English Patient, for example. Incredibly moving book, visually stunning movie. I enjoyed both LOTR versions, as well.
Since Gaiman has been a supporter of the Harry Potter books, obviously he isn't all broken up about it. The more you read, the more you discover that there are only so many ideas out there, the important thing is to have an original voice and combine things in a new way.

Certain kinds of books show up at the used bookstores near me; it's a good resource for some things but not the rarities. Still, I manage to find a lot of things to buy. And I get to recycle the books I don't want to keep - I'm really trying to not keep everything, there's just not room.
